13 million Americans celebrate the Diwali holiday in Pennsylvania, see the entire list

Nearly 13 million Pennsylvanians now have an additional holiday to celebrate as Gov. Josh Shapiro recently signed a bill officially recognizing Diwali as a state holiday.

What is Diwali?

Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, takes place on the third day of the five-day festival and symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. This Indian festival is determined by the Hindu lunar calendar. This year, Diwali takes place from October 29th to November 3rd, with the main holiday being on October 31st.

The new legislation, Senate Bill 402, was introduced by Senator Greg Rothman, who represents the 34th District, and Senator Nikil Saval, who represents Philadelphia.

While Diwali is now an official national holiday, it is important to note that schools, government offices and businesses are not required to close for the holiday.

Shapiro values ​​“Asian American community in Pennsylvania”

Governor Shapiro said in an official statement: “By signing this bill, we not only recognize the importance of Diwali, but also celebrate the Asian American community's rich cultural heritage and many contributions to Pennsylvania.” Diwali symbolizes the triumph of light of darkness, of knowledge over ignorance, and of hope over despair – values ​​that should guide our Commonwealth.”

“This new state holiday is a powerful expression of the inclusion, respect and unity we value in this Commonwealth. Today we reaffirm our commitment to celebrating the traditions and cultures that make our state vibrant and dynamic.”

Another senator from Pennsylvania, Rothman, stated: “Recognizing Diwali as an official state holiday celebrates the rich cultural diversity of our Commonwealth,” while Senator Saval, a Democrat, reiterated: “As the number of Asian Americans here in Pennsylvania and across the country “The official recognition of Diwali by our Commonwealth sends a clear message of inclusion.”
