49ers-Cardinals: Brandon Aiyuk records first 100-yard game of season

Maybe a silver lining. While the 49ers blew a 13-point lead against the Arizona Cardinals because the offense was inefficient in the second half and the defense was consistently inconsistent all year, there is a bright spot. 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk.

The wide receiver made eight catches for 147 yards and was targeted 12 times. Before Sunday's game, he had scored 25 times on the season and had only gained 167 yards.

We all know the offseason drama at the start of the 2024 season. A lot of it was due to Aiyuk making it through training camp. Catches he made in his sleep suddenly turned into drops. In the New York Jets game in Week 1 alone, Aiyuk had more drops than he had in his entire 2023 season.

Unfortunately, there are no touchdowns on a 147-yard game, and that certainly would have helped in this game. The 49ers offense continued to shoot itself in the foot with turnovers and offensive line play.

“Yeah, not good,” Aiyuk said from his locker after the loss. No matter what question was asked, Sunday's disappointment was written all over his face. Every question asked contained little detail or explanation.

As for the hole the 49ers have dug themselves into, Aiyuk isn't skeptical.

“I think we’ll be fine.”

Aiyuk himself is just one piece the 49ers are waiting for. They still have to see if they get Christian McCaffrey back at all this season while he's sidelined with Achilles tendonitis. There's also Dre Greenlaw and Ricky Pearsall.

Hopefully these pieces can reach the 49ers before they are pushed even further against the wall.

It seems like AIyuk is a step in the right direction, especially given his previous games, but do you think the 49ers wide receiver is “back” or will you need another game to decide if he's shaken off the rust has?
