49ers Chiefs: Steve Spagnuolo finds no weakness in Brock Purdy

The San Francisco 49ers are one day away from the Kansas City Chiefs. Regardless of whether you call it the “Revenge Game,” it will certainly be an important game.

The Chiefs not only have experience against the 49ers' offense, but they also have experience in giving them some problems. What's notable is that man coverage played a role in the Super Bowl loss. This defensive game plan can be attributed to defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo.

Spagnuolo had high praise for 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Obviously, Purdy was the one who had to direct that defense and almost put the 49ers in a position to win.

“I don’t see any weakness in this quarterback (Purdy),” Spagnuolo said when asked about preparing for the 49ers’ offense. “Every time I put the film on, I’m more and more impressed.”

That's high praise from one of the best defensive coordinators in the league. Days later, Purdy would be asked about it.

“I would disagree,” Purdy said with a laugh. “I think I definitely have something to work on and get better at. I appreciate the comments, but there is always something to get better at in the NFL. And even as a quarterback you can never be perfect. There is always something. I appreciate that, but yeah, I need to get better too.”

Regardless of what Purdy thinks about Spagnuolo's words, there's no denying the fact that Spagnuolo can say something so positive that it can carry some weight. That said, when have you ever heard a coach talk about an upcoming opponent? not talk positively about someone? Sure, we see coaches making fools of themselves during games, and some make comments after the game when things get heated. In advance? They won't say anything negative.

Even when the 49ers were under Chip Kelly, opposing coaches called them a good football team. This is all about keeping up appearances, and being positive is probably also about avoiding the Michael Jordan effect, where a player takes it personally. You don't want to give a professional athlete fuel when you compete against them.

That doesn't mean what Spagnuolo says is disingenuous or that deep down the Chiefs think Purdy is terrible. That said, we really don't know how much respect the Chiefs coaching staff has Really has for Brock Purdy.

Let's see how he does against Spagnuolo in round 2. Perhaps this lack of weakness will become apparent.
