49ers News: Safety Adrian Amos signs to practice squad

The San Francisco 49ers have signed veteran safety Adrian Amos, according to his agents at Equity Sports. With several safeties dealing with injuries, the Niners have added one of the most experienced defensive backs on the free-agent market. Amos is in his 10th NFL season and has previously played for the Green Bay Packers, Chicago Bears, New York Jets and Houston Texans.

Although he has never made a Pro Bowl, Amos was a consistent starter for the first eight seasons of his career. Amos was a fifth-round pick out of Penn State in 2015 and was a starting safety for the Bears for the first four seasons of his career. In his final season in Chicago, Amos set career highs in interceptions, tackles and passes defended. After a career year, he signed a four-year, $37 million contract with the Packers.

During his tenure in Green Bay, Amos was even more productive, recording at least 80 tackles in all four seasons with the Packers. When Amos hit free agency again at the start of his age-30 season, he became far less hotly contested. He signed a one-year contract with the Jets before last season, but was released after 11 games and finished the season with the Texans. He signed with the Jaguars last offseason but was released before Week 1.

The Niners are already without starting safety Talanoa Hufanga. Rookie safety Malik Mustapha left Week 6 early with an ankle injury and did not practice Monday. Mustapha worked on the sidelines.

Although Monday is a “bonus” practice, Mustapha's status for Sunday's game against the Kansas City Chiefs remains in question. The 49ers are short on safety as Ji'Ayir Brown, George Odum and Jaylen Mahoney are the only options on the active roster.

Mahoney missed the tackle that led to the Seahawks returning a kickoff for a touchdown. Therefore, the team could also consider replacing him on special teams.

As the 49ers prepare for their second-half run, they have generally turned to veterans. Last year was no different as Isaiah Oliver started the season at nickel and Logan Ryan was signed off the road and started the playoffs in the secondary.
