49ers News: Should SF trade for a WR after Brandon Aiyuk's injury?

The San Francisco 49ers had to deal with some unfortunate injury news this past weekend as Brandon Aiyuk suffered a torn ACL and ACL in the loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, effectively ending his season.

It's been a year of ups and downs for San Francisco, as they've struggled to find any form of consistency and are now 3-4 heading into a crucial week against the Dallas Cowboys.

Now they appear to be even further behind the eight-ball without their top receiver, as the team is still searching for its midseason identity.

In addition to Aiyuk's injury, the 49ers were without Deebo Samuel last weekend, while Christian McCaffrey was sidelined with his Achilles tendonitis issues.

San Francisco has invested heavily in its 2024 team, but things are going downhill for a group that entered the season as top Super Bowl favorites.

With Aiyuk now out for the year, is it time to consider a midseason trade for a wide receiver?

The 49ers have historically been willing to give up players with good skills when needed. In 2019, they traded for Emmanuel Sanders, who helped bolster the wide receiver unit during San Francisco's first Super Bowl run. Then, in 2022, the 49ers flipped a series of picks for Christian McCaffrey to make a big push and finally get over the hump.

A few seasons later, San Francisco still hasn't reached its goal, and this could be one of the last years with its current core, so there may be urgency to make a move at the trade deadline.

“We’re trying to look at everything,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said of the trades on Monday. “Of course, with the other issues that came up yesterday, you still want to deal with everything, but it's about what options are there, with things that we can implement that won't completely harm us, that will help us now, and.” will not harm us in the future.”

However, in this case, it may make sense to stay informed despite the great loss.

San Francisco drafted wide receiver Ricky Pearsall in the first round with the expectation of him breaking into the rotation this year before likely taking on a larger role last year.

Pearsall played in his first NFL game last weekend, made his first catch of his career and saw a fair amount of snaps, especially after Aiyuk left the game.

Additionally, the 49ers drafted slot wideout Jacob Cowing in the fourth round, who was seen in a returner role and even earned some snaps this weekend when Jauan Jennings was sidelined.

Both players have shown they have the potential to make plays, and San Francisco invested in them via the draft, and their opportunity is now.

Additionally, the 49ers still have two of their top receivers in Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings, both of whom have been the focal point of the offense at times this year. They will also look to bring Christian McCaffrey back after the bye week, while potentially giving star tight end George Kittle a larger role.

So there is still no shortage of weapons in San Francisco. The on-field unit still has an above-average skill position in the NFL, and the depth can now be utilized after the unfortunate injury to the team's top receiver.
