Rapper Choppa from “Choppa Style” injured in car accident | Keith Spera

Choppa, the New Orleans rapper best known for his highly danceable, catchy hit “Choppa Style,” was injured in a car accident on Sunday night, according to a post on his official Instagram account.

He was still in the hospital on Wednesday morning, his family said in the post. The nature of his injuries was not explained.

His fiancée, who was in the car with him, is not in the hospital and “is doing well,” the post said.

Choppa, whose real name is Darwin Turner, released the single “Choppa Style” in 2002 before his debut album, also titled “Choppa Style,” was released on Take Fo' Records in January 2003. “Choppa Style” barely made the top 100 on the national Hot Singles chart, but Choppa has parlayed the song's enduring regional popularity – it's played over the speakers at Caesars Superdome at Saints games and during locker room victory celebrations – into a multifaceted career.

He has appeared in commercials and advertisements for the Rouses grocery store chain with the slogan “Shoppa Style.”

He frequently appears at Pelicans games at the Smoothie King Center, most recently at a playoff game on April 27 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

A game day in the life of Choppa

In 2022, Choppa collaborated with local country-pop violinist and singer Amanda Shaw on a remake of the song “Louisiana Saturday Night.” Choppa and Shaw subsequently performed together at several events.

He was previously a member of the 504 Boyz, a local all-star hip hop crew under the auspices of Master P's newer New No Limit Records. The 504 Boyz also included Magic, Silkk the Shocker, Krazy, T-Bo and Curren$y.
