MCAS Miramar Air Show returns to San Diego skies – NBC 7 San Diego

America's largest military air show is back in our backyard!

The Miramar Air Show returns for the entire weekend of September 27-29 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, offering free to the public flight solos, military demonstration teams, historic aircraft, fighter jets and more.

In addition to the shows, you can hop into one of the many simulators and experience the feeling of flying for yourself on the flight line and at the Innovation Tech Expo.

Admission, parking and deck seating are free. No tickets are required for entry. If you're a superfan and want to enhance your air show experience, you can browse preferred ticket options here, such as preferred seating with the best views or designated family-friendly zones.

Military discounts are available for Friday and must be purchased at MCAS Miramar ITT with a valid military ID.

The documentary takes viewers inside the cockpit of the Navy's elite fighter pilot squadron. NBC 7's Audra Stafford has the details.

Aerobatic pilot Vicky Benzing

Spectators can experience history at this special air show. According to the California Aeronautical University, there are not many fighter planes left in the air and even fewer are flown by a female aerobatic pilot.

In a premiere at the MCAS Miramar Air Show, renowned aerobatic pilot Vicky Benzing will perform a flight demonstration in a recently refurbished P-51 Air Racer named “Plum Crazy.”

Aviator Benzing is known for her amazing aerobatic skills and was named the fastest woman of all time at the National Championship Air Races in Reno, Nevada.

Benzing has a passion for everything that has to do with air.

She is a pilot, skydiver, aerobatic pilot and race car driver with over 10,000 hours of flight time. She also holds a PhD in chemistry from UC Berkeley.

Watch Benzing fly her Boeing Stearman in the Netflix documentary “Mercury 13,” which tells the story of women who fought side by side with male astronauts for gender equality.
