What we learned from Melania Trump's rare Fox News interview

Melania Trump has promoted her memoirs Melaniaout October 8th, consists mostly of crazy, conspiracy theory-laden videos that she posts on social media. But today she took a more conventional approach and attended her first job interview in two years. Fox & friends Co-host Ainsley Earhardt's questions weren't exactly hard-hitting; At one point she raved about Donald Trump: “He’s just strong! “He's not afraid to talk about it like it really is.” But whether intentional or not, the interview gave a glimpse into our most mysterious former first lady. Here's what we learned.

One might think that Melania isn't exactly excited about a possible return to the White House just because she missed virtually all of Donald Trump's 2024 campaign events (except the ones she was paid to attend).

But when asked what she thought about her husband running again, Melania said: “I support him. I know how passionate he is about making America great again.”

Melania found out about the attack on July 13th through a call from an employee. She had been watching Donald's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on television, but paused minutes before the shooting. “Something must have been looking over me, so I didn't really see it live, but maybe three minutes, a few minutes later,” she said.

Melania learned about the second attack at Mar-a-Lago that month from television reports. (She was in New York at the time.)

“I think both events were truly miraculous,” she said, “if you really think about it. July 13th was a miracle. So much (shows a few millimeters with his fingers), and he couldn’t be with us.”

Earhardt asked Melania just one slightly provocative question: Why didn't the Secret Service do more to protect her husband, especially when they knew of an alleged Iranian threat against him? “If they knew this property existed, why didn't they sweep the golf course?” she said.

Melania had already praised the Secret Service agents who were with her husband on September 15 and made no attempt to answer this question. Instead, she repeated points she made in one of her book promotion videos, suggesting that the mainstream media and Democrats were responsible for the violence against her husband.

“You know, it’s interesting how quiet everything got,” she said. “All mainstream media. There were a few days of coverage of the July 13 event and then it went quiet, leaving me with a lot of questions: What's going on? This is not normal.”

“And is it really shocking that all this egregious violence is directed at my husband?” she continued. “Especially when we hear the leaders of the opposition party and the mainstream media branding him as a threat to democracy and calling him vile names, they are only fueling a toxic atmosphere and giving power to all those people who want to do him harm . This has to stop.”

When asked why she didn't speak at the Republican National Convention this summer, Melania said she felt like she said everything she needed to in the two-page letter she released the day after Trump's near-assassination.

“Would you like to talk about why you decided not to go on stage and give a speech like you did in 2016?” Earhardt asked.

“It was my decision. I think it was exactly the right time. I think it was the right time,” Melania replied. “In the days before, I wrote a beautiful letter to America, and I think that letter was, in a way, my speech.”

Melania mentioned the letter again while admonishing the media and Democrats for criticizing her husband: “The country must unite and I encourage everyone to re-read my letter that I wrote on July 14th. “

When asked what she thought people knew about her husband, Melania replied: “That he is truly a family man.” He loves his family. He loves this country and his only wish is to make it better and more prosperous.”

This point has truly been lost amid the tabloid coverage of Trump's extramarital affair in the '90s, the more than 20 allegations of sexual misconduct against him, the conviction for hush-money payments to a porn star, and Trump's sexual assault charges against E. Jean Carroll.

Earhardt asked Melanie about her “reaction to Kamala Harris replacing Joe Biden as the Democratic nominee,” but I guess we'll never know what that was because instead of answering the question, the former first lady skillfully glossed over the talking points Trump campaign rattled off:

Well, from my perspective, the records speak for themselves. The country is suffering. People are unable to buy the usual daily necessities for their families. Wars are raging all over the world. Soldiers are dying, they died under this government because of weak leadership. The border is open and dangerous. A lot of fentanyl is coming over and killing our youth. It's very hard to see and the economy really isn't that great. Inflation is high and if we compare these four years under this administration with the four years under my husband as Commander-in-Chief, he led the country through peace and strength and the border was more secure than ever before. There were no wars, people were well off, they had jobs and could feed their families.

She acknowledged that we might have to put up with some “strong tweets” if her husband is re-elected:

So Americans have to decide what they really want. Maybe a few strong tweets, but everything else is great for this country. So on November 5th, everything is in the hands of the American people.

However, Melania can't remember any other problems during the first Trump administration.
