Brewers 7-2 Pirates (September 24, 2024) Game Recap

PITTSBURGH – Willy Adames secured his first 30-20 season in the Milwaukee Brewers' 7-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night.

Adames stole second on an infield single, his first of two hits, with one out in the second inning. For the seven-year veteran, it was the 20th stolen base in addition to 32 home runs. He and 20-year-old rookie Jackson Chourio (21 homers, 21 stolen bases) are the Brewers' first teammates reaching 20-20 in the same season.

“It’s a special season,” said Adames, who is fourth in the majors with 111 RBI. “This is a special moment for me and my family, especially at this point in my career. I think all the work we've done is paying off now. It makes me happy that you can see the numbers after all the work we have done. Of course, win too. I think that makes it even more special when you win.”

Hoby Milner (5-1) pitched a perfect fifth inning for the win, relieving Tobias Myers, who allowed two runs and six hits in the first four.

With a record of 90-67, the Brewers have achieved 90 wins in consecutive seasons for the second time in their history, previously doing so in 1978 and 1979.

“We have to continue to play decent baseball,” Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said. “We were decent today. … We strung out the bats when we needed to. Willy had some big hits. We took advantage of it. We took our walks when necessary. Played good defense. They kept us in front.”

Adames was the first of four consecutive batters to strike out Bailey Falter (8-9) for three runs with one out in a second. Rhys Hoskins walked behind Adames' single and before an RBI double by Sal Frelick. Joey Ortiz then dribbled a two-run single past a leaping Nick Yorke at second base.

Pittsburgh answered with two runs in the bottom half. Jared Triolo hit an RBI single; Bryan De La Cruz scored on Yorke's sacrifice fly.

“I thought our performance was good,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “We also had good attacks until late in the game. … We had 10 hits and some pretty good swings.”

Adames took the lead in the fourth with a double shot to the left. He later scored from third when Ortiz grounded out to first baseman Billy Cook, who threw past shortstop Isiah Kiner-Falefa in what could have been the start of an inning-ending double play.

Falter gave up four runs and five hits, with five strikeouts and one walk in five innings.

“This time of year,” Falter said. “Just, you know, the body gets a little tired. That's it. … I had some ups and some downs. I'm just trying to finish the year strong. This is it.”

Pirates reliever Isaac Mattson walked Adames and Hoskins with the bases loaded before being pulled in the seventh. William Contreras scored on a sacrifice fly from Frelick.
