Don Johnson says that marrying right keeps you young

Don Johnson believes a good marriage will keep you young.

The 74-year-old actor married his wife Kelley Phleger, 56, in 1999 and now insists that finding the right partner is the key to avoiding exhausting stress.

He told People magazine: “A bad marriage ages you!”

The “Miami Vice” actor – who has 41-year-old Jesse with his former partner Patti D'Arbanville, 34-year-old Dakota and his 39-year-old stepson Alexander Bauer with his ex-wife Melanie Griffith and Atherton, 24, Jasper , 22, and 18-year-old Deacon with Kelly — praised his “wonderful” spouse and said his six children also played a big role in keeping him in such great shape.

He joked: “Go ahead. How else do you think I have six children? I can certainly name that.”

Don gave an update on his children and said they are “doing well.”

He added: “They are all out but always come back.

“Some of them never go away! And honestly, you don't want them to leave. At least I don’t.”

The “Knives Out” star shared that spending time with his family is much more important to him than working, and so he often tries to choose smaller roles to prioritize his loved ones.

He explained, “For an actor, work-life balance is an interesting thing because films eat up your life.” TV shows eat up your life.

“Luckily I've gotten to the point where I can choose roles and sometimes I often prefer the supporting role because I still enjoy what I do, but I don't always want to work so long away from mine Family.”

Looking back on his time in the spotlight, Don admitted that he found his fame overwhelming and reflected on whether his difficulties becoming a public figure were similar to those of Elvis Presley.

He lamented: “For a long time I couldn’t go anywhere.

“I had to isolate myself. You know where you are. We had 24/7 security.

“One day I was thinking about Elvis and thought, 'Isn't that the way Elvis lived and died?' Not that I'm comparing myself to Elvis, but rather that he can't have a private life.

“So I learned to deal with it and vowed not to let it imprison me.”
