Utah's QB Cam Rising out against Oklahoma State, Isaac Wilson starts

Utah quarterback Cam Rising wore a protective glove on his throwing hand during pregame warmups and did not start for the Utes on Saturday afternoon as he was sidelined for the second consecutive week with a right hand injury.

Freshman quarterback Isaac Wilson made his second career start in Rising's place, leading No. 12 Utah into its top-15 road game against No. 14 Oklahoma State in one of the top matchups on the 2024 Big 12 schedule.

ESPN had previously reported that the decision on Rising would not be made until Week 4.

Due to his injury, Rising has had limited training this week and is not expected to be 100% fit when he plays. He will be closely monitored to see how his injured fingers affect his shooting technique. The fingers play a big role in both spin and speed, which will impact his effectiveness in the passing game.

He injured his hand in the second quarter against Baylor on September 7 when he threw a ball away, was pushed out of bounds and landed awkwardly on the water coolers on the Bears' sideline.

Rising warmed up with a glove before last week's game against Utah State but did not play. Against Baylor, he was spotted on the sideline with two fingers wrapped. It is uncertain if he will use the glove on Saturday.

Utah's offense plays most of its snaps under center and uses clapping as a snapping mechanism, both of which would stress the fingers.

Wilson is a true freshman who made his first career start against Utah State, completing 20 of 33 passes for 239 yards and three touchdowns. He participated in first-team practice this week when Rising was out of the field.

Wilson is the brother of former BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, who now plays in the NFL for the Denver Broncos.

Rising is a seventh-year senior who developed into one of the Pac-12's best quarterbacks in 2021 and 2022. He has been plagued by injuries over the past few seasons, as an injury sustained in the Rose Bowl following the 2022 season ultimately caused him to miss the entire 2023 season.
