“The Wild Robot” has a near-perfect 98% critic score, one of the best ever in the genre

While in many ways it feels like Dreamworks has been chasing Disney and Pixar for ages despite their own financial successes, this weekend it's releasing something that surpasses almost everything else in its catalog: The Wild Robot.

The Wild Robot is the second highest-rated film in Dreamworks history, with a 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 100 critics. The only one above this is How to Train Your Dragon at 99%.

If you summarize the best children's animated films of the CGI era, it ends up in the top 10, where besides HTTYD all other films come from Disney and Pixar. The list:

  1. Toy Story 2 – 100%
  2. Toy Story – 100%
  3. Finding Nemo – 99%
  4. How to Train Your Dragon – 99%
  5. The Wild Robot – 98%
  6. From the inside out – 98%
  7. Toy Story 3 – 98%
  8. Zootopia – 98%
  9. Increase – 98%
  10. Toy Story 4 – 97%

So yes, a full 40% of this list is all Toy Story movies, but you can see the kind of company that does, and those are deeply impressive results. Here is the official synopsis of The Wild Robot:

“The epic adventure follows the journey of a robot – ROZZUM Unit 7134, or “Roz” for short – who is shipwrecked on an uninhabited island and must learn to adapt to the harsh environment by gradually developing relationships with the animals the island and becomes the robot adoptive parents of an orphaned gosling.”

And here's the trailer if you haven't seen it yet. I have to admit it's pretty emotional for a trailer alone!

I fully expect this film to do well at the box office, even if it's not a sequel to a previous hit. We've seen much lower quality animated films sell in large numbers, and if families come out in large numbers, this film has the potential to become a modern classic, which I'm sure Dreamworks would be very happy about.

The Wild Robot is released today and we will start providing winnings information from Sunday so we can see how it works. Last weekend saw a $25 million split between Beetlejuice and Transformers One, with the latter being the case another Great children's film (that adults can certainly enjoy too) with an insane audience rating of 98%. The only other major release this weekend is Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, which looks set to be a bomb with the public due to its cost, poor reviews and confusing concept. Long live the wild robot.
