Muriel Furrer dies at the age of 18: Cyclist dies after serious head injury in horror accident at World Championships

CYCLIST Muriel Furrer has tragically died aged just 18 from a horrific head injury.

The teenager was flown to hospital by emergency helicopter after a serious fall at the road and paracycling world championships in Zurich on Thursday.

She died on Friday morning in the University Hospital of Zurich.

A statement from the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) said: “With the death of Muriel Furrer, the international cycling community has lost a rider with a bright future.”

“The UCI and the Organizing Committee of the 2024 UCI Road and Paracycling Road World Championships extend their sincere condolences to Muriel Furrer's family, friends and her association, Swiss Cycling.

“Muriel Furrer’s family asks that their privacy be respected at this very painful time.”

The UCI said there were no “established facts” about how the crash occurred.

The governing body also said on Thursday: “The investigations by the relevant authorities are ongoing.”

A statement from Swiss Cycling said: “Our hearts are broken, we are at a loss for words.”

“It is with a heavy heart and infinite sadness that we have to say goodbye to Muriel Furrer today.

“We are losing a warm and wonderful young woman who always had a smile on her face. There is no understanding, only pain and sadness.”

“Our thoughts are with her loved ones and family. We ask that you respect their privacy during this incredibly difficult time. Thank you for everything, dear Muriel!”

Furrer finished 44th in the time trial earlier this week.

The Swiss cyclist was a two-time silver medalist in the time trial and road race at this year's Swiss National Road Championships.

The championship should be continued in accordance with the racing program and at the request of Furrer's family.
