Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell is named Baseball America's minor league player of the year

Red Sox prospect Kristian Campbell was named Baseball America's Minor League Player of the Year, marking his meteoric rise from a fourth-round draft pick in 2023 to one of the top prospects in baseball.

Campbell, whose focus at Georgia Tech was hitting line drives and ground balls and then using his speed, reworked his swing and intent last offseason, embracing the idea that he could drive the ball in the air. The results were spectacular. He hit .330/.439/.558 with 20 home runs and 24 steals in 115 games at High A Greenville, Double A Portland and Triple A Worcester.

“It kind of clicked all of a sudden and it happened pretty quickly this season,” Campbell said. “I think it surprised me and a few other people, but it was cool. It happens quickly, but in a good way.

“I've had a pretty good season, but it's just the beginning. I have to try to do it all again next year and the year after.”

After playing primarily second base in college, Campbell demonstrated the ability to move around the diamond and play well at shortstop, third base and center field – a versatile profile that offers numerous paths to the big leagues leagues possible.

Campbell's recognition comes after Roman Anthony was named the sport's top prospect by Baseball America earlier this month. On Tuesday, the publication announced that Anthony will grace the cover of its annual Prospect Handbook.
