Kane limps away as frustrated Bayern are pinned down by Leverkusen

Harry Kane was left out injured as Bayern Munich were held to a 1-1 draw at home to champions Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Robert Andrich gave the visitors the lead in Munich after 31 minutes, but Aleksandar Pavlovic equalized for leaders Bayern eight minutes later with an incredible long-range shot.

England captain Kane, who remained largely anonymous in front of goal, limped off with a foot injury four minutes from time after a collision with Leverkusen's Amine Adli.

Coach Vincent Kompany said it was “too early” to assess the extent of the injury but he was confident Kane would be fit for Wednesday's Champions League game at Aston Villa.

“I don’t have the exact information, but hopefully it’s just a little bit of pain and we’ll get him back this week,” Kompany said.

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl added: “When Harry leaves the field it means something because he's pretty tough.”

“(The incident) doesn't look good, but we hope it's made of strong English wood and nothing is broken.”

Bayern's Serge Gnabry hit the crossbar twice in the second half, but Leverkusen managed to draw.

“We definitely deserved more,” said Bayern captain Manuel Neuer.

“We were clearly the better team and had the better chances. The goal conceded was frustrating.”

Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was satisfied.

“Against Bayern you have to be disciplined and make sacrifices,” he said, adding: “That was the style and way we needed to play here today.”

“We meant it, limited their chances and I’m happy with that point.”

Bayern were champions for 11 seasons before Alonso's Leverkusen turned German football on its head last season and became the first team to complete the league and cup double undefeated.

The hosts were completely dominant at the start and had their best chance in the 19th minute with a free kick that Michael Olise shot just a few centimeters over the goal.

However, against the run of play, Leverkusen took the lead, Andrich sank a low shot from a corner after a mistake by Pavlovic.

Despite their dominant field position, Bayern managed to equalize with a breathtaking shot from well outside the penalty area. Pavlovic made up for his mistake with an excellent curling move.

The hosts started the second half in the same way as the first, with Gnabry hitting the woodwork twice within seconds after a classic pass from Kane.

In the final minutes both teams appeared content to wait for a draw, but while Bayern remain three points ahead of Leverkusen, Kane's late injury will be a concern ahead of a busy fixture list.

Earlier, Benjamin Sesko scored twice in five minutes as RB Leipzig's young attack combined brilliantly to beat Augsburg 4-0 at home.

Sesko scored twice and set up fellow 21-year-old Xavi Simons, who himself set up a goal for 24-year-old Lois Openda.

Augsburg's best chance of the game came when a penalty was saved midway through the first half.

Leipzig coach Marco Rose praised his team's “belief in ourselves” and said “we were anything but happy” after they went three games without a win.

Last year's runners-up Stuttgart came back down to earth after beating Borussia Dortmund 5-1 on Sunday and needed a stoppage-time goal from Deniz Undav to earn a 2-2 draw at Wolfsburg.

Jonas Wind gave Wolves the lead after ten minutes, but the visitors equalized late in the first half when Enzo Millot grabbed a rebound after his penalty was saved.

Midway through the second half, Stuttgart found themselves on the wrong side of the ball, with Atakan Karazor sending out a second yellow card out of the park even though it looked like he was the victim of a foul.

Wolfsburg took the lead five minutes later through Mohammed Amoura, who escaped a sending-off thanks to a VAR review. Undav's late goal saved his team from a tough defeat.

St. Pauli won its first game in the top flight since February 2011 with a 3-0 win over loss-making and hapless Freiburg.

A brace from Elias Saad and a goal from Dapo Afolayan led St. Pauli to victory, with Freiburg having two goals ruled out for offside.

Tomas Cvancara's goal in the sixth minute of injury time gave Borussia Mönchengladbach a 1-0 home win against Union Berlin, ending their unbeaten league record.

Heidenheim won 2-0 at 10-man Mainz.
