Jacksonville Jaguars vs Houston Texans live game thread

HOUSTON, Texas – Looking to end their 0-4 drought to start the season, the Jacksonville Jaguars travel to NRG Stadium to take on an AFC South rival in the Houston Texans.

Remember the rule of five. The game is over if the Jacksonville Jaguars win this important statistical battle. For those who don't remember, it has to do with sacks and envelopes. If the Jaguars have three sacks and give up two, they are plus-one. They have a plus-three if they commit four turnovers and give up just one. That would give them a plus four for the day. They want to achieve a plus-five ratio in every game. On average, teams that achieve the Rule of Five Scenarios win 91 percent of their NFL games.

This game is a must for head coach Doug Pederson and company, otherwise the consequences could be disastrous. The Jaguars need to bounce back from a miserable 47-10 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football.

The offense is trying to find stability and confidence against the Texans' strong defense and dangerous pass rush. The offensive line has struggled, so keep an eye on the perimeter matchups in this contest. In particular, Will Anderson Jr.

The Jaguars' defensive front has struggled to overwhelm the passer, and a formidable Texans offensive line will prove a difficult challenge.

Our Jaguars On SI beat writer John Shipley predicted a 27-13 win for the Texans.

“The Jaguars offense has had bright periods in the past under head coach Doug Pederson and offensive coordinator Press Taylor, but the first three weeks were probably the worst stretch in football between the two,” Shipley wrote. “The Texans were far from the dominant team so many expected in 2024, but they did enough to be considered strong favorites in the AFC South in 2024. The Jaguars have sat in their seat before and seen what the pressure of expectation can do.” It's still too early to see if the Texans will make a breakthrough, but even at this level of the season, they're playing well enough to win every weekend to be a tough opponent.

“On the field, the Texans’ pass rush is the biggest mismatch. The Texans have the best pass-rush duo in the NFL in Danielle Hunter and Will Anderson Jr., and the Jaguars' offensive tackle duo of Anton Harrison and Cam Robinson were. This is arguably the team's weakest link. Despite the must-win scenario, this just seems like a win for the Texans.
