Significant delays were reported on Metra train routes throughout the Chicagoland area due to signaling problems

Several Metra lines in the Chicagoland area experienced significant delays during the Monday morning commute due to signaling problems, officials said.

The delays were first reported just before 6 a.m. Monday, when Metra reported that trains were stopped on the Milwaukee District North (MD-N), Union Pacific Northwest, Heritage Corridor and North Central Service lines.

Metra said inbound and outbound trains were stopped due to “positive issues with the train control system” and the duration of the delays was unknown.

Around 7 a.m., Metra said the problems with the positive train control system were caused by Canadian National Railway.

Motorists reported to Lake and McHenry County Scanners that a freight train was blocking several intersections in the Grayslake and Libertyville area.

Heavy traffic delays were reported at the Route 120, Route 83, Peterson Road and Winchester Road railroad crossings.

Metra said around 7:40 a.m. that inbound and outbound MD-N trains were running with significant delays. “Some trains may depart late, run out of sequence or be cancelled.”

Metra reported 20 minutes later that all MD-N trains were running with significant delays.

Metra also reported that some trains on the NCS route were not running due to the problems and that other trains on the route continued to experience significant delays. “Passengers should consider seeking alternative transportation.”

Metra said riders on the UP-NW line from Harvard to Fox River Grove may want to travel to Barrington or seek alternative transportation because all trains on the line were severely delayed.

A social media user replied that trains on the UP-NW route were not running at all.

“They don’t operate at all. We were told that driving from CL to Palatine, Round Lake or Elgin was our best option. I’m on the West Line now,” the user said.
