MLB ditches criticized All-Star Game uniforms and returns to team jerseys

NEW YORK (AP) — Major League Baseball is reverting to using major team uniforms for the All-Star Game, scrapping the criticized special jerseys used for the past four years.

Club uniforms were worn by the American League from 1933 to 2019 and by the National League from 1934 to 2019. The league's players from the host All-Star team will wear their home jerseys and the players from the other All-Star team will wear their away jerseys.

When play resumed in 2021 after the pandemic-related cancellation in 2020, MLB had a uniform deal with Nike and Fanatics, and the All-Stars were outfitted in specially designed league uniforms that were reviled by traditionalists.

Participants in the Home Run Derby wear their home team's uniform for the derby. Other players on the field watching the competition wear special uniforms.

MLB also announced it will make gradual changes to regular team uniforms in 2025 and 2026, responding to criticism from players and fans over new materials introduced this year designed by Nike and manufactured by Fanatics . The pants fit poorly and were a bit see-through and the writing was smaller.

Changes include pant customization, larger letters, and earlier fabrics requested by players.

MLB said the changes were the result of discussions between MLB, the players' association, Nike and Fanatics. It will take until Opening Day 2026 for the changes to be fully implemented.
