Schwarber HR, how to watch NLDS

play

The Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets meet on Saturday in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, the first postseason meeting between the two rivals, who have played nearly 1,100 regular-season games against each other.

The Mets started the best-of-five series with a bang, hitting a stunning home run off Pete Alonso in the ninth inning to beat the Milwaukee Brewers in the deciding game of the wild-card series on Thursday. Philadelphia is making its third straight playoff appearance and has won the premier league title since 2011, earning a bye from the LDS.

Kodai Senga will start for the Mets at CItizens Bank Park, a shocking move considering the right-hander has only played one game this season due to injury. Phillies star Zack Wheeler takes the mound for the Phillies and has a career 2.42 ERA in 11 postseason games (10 starts).

Stay tuned for updates throughout Saturday's game:

Phillies star Zack Wheeler went seven innings and 111 pitches without a score, with the Phillies leading 1-0 in the bottom of the eighth. Wheeler, who made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2013, gave up just one hit with nine strikeouts and walks.

Kyle Schwarber's leadoff home run in the first inning remains the only hit of the game, with Zack Wheeler going scoreless in five innings and allowing just one hit with seven strikeouts.

Mets reliever David Peterson pitched three shutout frames in relief of Kodai Senga and worked around a man on second in the fourth and fifth innings, striking out Bryce Harper to end the final frame.

Mark Vientos led off with a single in the top of the fourth after holding the Mets without a fight for three innings, and the walk to Brandon Nimmo gave New York a scoring opportunity with no outs. But Zack Wheeler struck out Pete Alonso and got Jose Iglesias to hit an inning-ending double play.

Mets right-hander Kodai Senga made his first start since July and was replaced after two innings with three strikeouts by left-hander David Peterson, who gave up Kyle Schwarber's home run in the first inning.

Peterson made the save on Thursday in Game 3 of the wild-card series, the first of his career. The 29-year-old posted a 10-4 record with a 2.90 ERA in 21 regular season starts.

After Zack Wheeler toppled the Mets early in the inning, Kyle Schwarber hit Kodai Senga with a home run to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning, sending the crowd at Citizens Bank Park into an uproar.

Schwarber's home run was his 21st of the postseason, breaking a tie with Derek Jeter for fourth place on the all-time list.

Kodai Senga vs. Phillies: Mets name Game 1 starter in stunning move

PHILADELPHIA – One day, Kodai Senga is pitching in Florida and wonders if he's wasting his time getting ready for a game that might not even exist.

The next moment, Pete Alonso hits a game-winning three-run home run in Milwaukee, keeping the New York Mets' Cinderella season alive, and Senga is boarding a plane to join his teammates in Philadelphia for one of the most unlikely starts in the Major League Baseball to experience postseason history.

Senga, who has pitched just once all season, pitching a total of 5⅓ innings on July 26, will start Game 1 of the National League Division Series on Saturday afternoon against the strong Phillies.

“I’m ready for anything,” Senga said. “If they say 10 pitches, I’m all in for 10 pitches. If they say 200, I’m in for 200.”

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was cautious when asked, saying he also had no idea how long Senga would pitch.

“We’ll see, we’ll let it run,” Mendoza said. “We have a plan. But we’ll go out and watch him closely and go from there.”
