Michigan football played a rematch for the national championship on Saturday.

The new Big Ten brings with it a conference matchup between the Wolverines (4-1, 2-0 Big Ten) and Washington (3-2, 1-1 Big Ten), just nine months after Michigan beat the Huskies and the 2023 national championship won 34-13.

Fast forward to now, and Michigan is off to a rough start trying to become champions again under the leadership of coach Sherrone Moore. The Wolverines are 2-0 since switching to Alex Orji at quarterback, but last week's thrilling win over Minnesota didn't inspire much confidence. Now Michigan travels to Seattle for its first road game of the 2024 season, a 2,000-mile trip.

Pregame notes on the Michigan vs. Washington football game

As frustrated as Michigan fans are with the offensive woes and early loss, Washington is off to a tougher start to recapturing the 2023 magic. The Huskies are 3-2 and have lost 21-18 to rival Washington State and Big Ten foe Rutgers, which came on the road last week.

Michigan players and coaches are excited about the change of scenery after the first five games were played exclusively at Michigan Stadium. Michigan is 17-2 in the last three and a half years outside of Ann Arbor, with both losses coming in the College Football Playoff.

Michigan's offense still has some things to figure out after narrowly escaping Minnesota last Saturday. It took an early lead again, but couldn't keep its foot on the pedal as the Gophers cleared things up, scoring three touchdowns. Orji once again threw for less than 100 yards as the Wolverines stuck to a smashmouth attack out of necessity.

Michigan vs Washington predictions

Tony Garcia, Detroit Free Press: It would be foolish to exclude Michigan from any game, but winning this game will be a challenge. It's a 2,000-mile journey into a hostile environment against a program looking to avenge a loss in a CFP championship game in January. U-Dub moved the ball well in the air and Michigan was vulnerable to the pass. If UM doesn't take an early lead, the second-half struggles of the last two weeks point to a possible collapse. Simply put, it's hard to win at Husky Stadium, where U-Dub has won 17 straight games. The choice: Washington 26, AT 20.
