Man fatally shot after fight escalates at youth football game in south Colorado Springs | News

Police are searching for the person who fatally shot a man after a fight escalated at a youth soccer game Saturday.

According to a sergeant at the Sand Creek substation, the call came in from the 1600 block of South Murray Boulevard on the Atlas Prep School campus just before 2:30 p.m.

A Facebook post shared on the school page, written by Brittney Stroh, CEO of Atlas Schools, said the shooting occurred on school grounds during an activity not associated with the school.

The post explained that the school rents out its sports fields and facilities to outside groups on weekends. On Saturday, a brawl escalated at one of the games organized by the groups, leaving one person dead.

“Although this occurred on Atlas grounds, neither Atlas nor its students were involved or affected. Our condolences go out to the family and friends affected by this tragedy,” the post reads.

In a statement to KOAA reporter Maggie Bryan, school officials said the shooting occurred near one of the school buildings and that Pop Warner was using the field at the time.

The Pikes Peak Pop Warner Youth Football and Cheer website shows that several youth league football games were scheduled to be played at Atlas Prep fields on Saturday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m

While police investigated the shooting, the southbound lanes of Murray Boulevard were closed from Center Park and the northbound lanes were closed at Merchant Court.

This is a developing story. Gazette news partner KOAA contributed to this report.
