'SNL' Vice Presidential Debate Mocks JD Vance and Tim Walz

play

Live from New York, it's the first and possibly only “Saturday Night Live” debate sketch of the 2024 election.

The show's latest cold open turned this week's vice presidential debate on its head, with Jim Gaffigan returning as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and Bowen Yang once again playing Senator JD Vance. The skit featured Vice President Kamala Harris, played by Maya Rudolph, looking on nervously along with her husband Douglas Emhoff (Andy Samberg).

Both candidates dodged a question about the Middle East crisis early in the debate outline, with Vance avoiding an answer and Walz simply saying, “The word fundamental is a lot.” Harris quickly became concerned about her vice president's performance , but Emhoff assured her that Walz wouldn't “say anything crazy.”

“I became friends with school shooters,” Walz then said, prompting a shocked Harris to break her wine glass. (Walz made this remark during the debate, but later told NBC News he was “talking about meeting people where there are school shooters.”)

The sketch also mocked Walz for claiming he was in Hong Kong during the Tiananmen Square protests.

“I think what happened is I went to Epcot,” Gaffigan’s character said. “You can travel all over the world and I had a few in the Germany section and I thought I was going to China. Whatever, I’m an idiot.”

Vance also received some jibes, with Yang's character explaining that when he said former President Donald Trump could be America's Hitler, he meant it “as a compliment.” He later repeatedly said there could be no verification of his statements as he insisted Trump had “peacefully relinquished power.”

“If we can stand here and lie, I would like to say that I was actually in Tiananmen Square,” Gaffigan’s Walz responded.

The sketch also showed Vance and Walz seemingly recognizing a surprising commonality, with the two contestants staring into each other's eyes at one point while music played to indicate they were getting closer. After spitting out her wine, Rudolph's Harris asked, “Why are they friends?” Why do they vibrate?”

But in the end, Rudolph's Harris was delighted that Vance declined to say that Trump lost the 2020 election, and the skit suggested it was a last-minute win for Walz. “Honey, we did it!” said Emhoff. “We got the tone!” Harris, meanwhile, called the debate a “huge victory” because it “didn’t make a difference”!

For the later part of the skit, Dana Carvey's President Joe Biden joined the debate watching party and criticized Walz's performance. “The vice president doesn’t matter,” he said dismissively as he ate an ice cream cone. “I mean, who the hell was Obama’s vice president? Nobody knows!”

Another highlight of Saturday's episode was the return of The Lonely Island, who debuted a new song in a digital short film about a bizarre business idea that involves feeding people sushi through a hole in a toilet stall.

“SNL” will return next week with an episode hosted by Ariana Grande and featuring musical guest Stevie Nicks.
