Budda Baker runs out of the tunnel

The Cleveland Browns are battling injuries on several fronts. With Nick Chubb out with no timetable for his return and several other players on the injured list, the Browns could look to make a trade or two to deal with those injuries.

Other players on the injured list include safety Juan Thornhill, a two-time Super Bowl champion. Thornhill played in Week 1 but injured his calf during the game, forcing him to be placed on the injured list.

Thornhill will be out and others will have to step in in his absence. Otherwise, the Browns may have to make a trade.

Because of his injury, Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report named them as a candidate to trade six-time Pro Bowler Budda Baker from the Arizona Cardinals.

“The more the Arizona Cardinals play like a potential contender, the less likely they are to consider trade offers for safety Budda Baker,” Knox wrote on Sept. 18. “Sunday's 41-10 loss to the Rams could be reason enough for the Cardinals to be buyers, not sellers, before the deadline — depending on how the next few weeks play out, of course. Still, Baker looms as Arizona's most realistic trade object. He's a six-time Pro Bowler and, at 28, still a quality playmaker. Plus, he's set to be a free agent in 2025.

“The Cardinals should expect to receive trade offers if they commit to any trade at all before Nov. 5. Even if they aren't eager to trade him, it would certainly result in a significant draft haul… The Browns, who aren't exactly shy about trading talent, could also consider Baker as a complement to safety Grant Delpit. Cleveland recently placed safety Juan Thornhill on the injured list with a calf injury.”

Thornhill struggled with injuries throughout his career

In 2023, Thornhill missed the Cleveland Browns' season opener due to a calf strain. Thornhill suffered another injury in November and only played in 11 games during the season.

At the beginning of the new year, he was extremely happy and emphasized that he felt physically better.

“It's a great start to actually be out there and playing. So I would definitely say it feels great,” he said in September, according to Scott Petrak of The Chronicle-Telegram. “Last year I was sore every week. This year I'm in a lot better place mentally and physically. I'm excited to show the world what I'm actually capable of and what type of player I am.”

After playing at least 16 games each year of his first four years, he has had to battle injuries for two straight seasons. That's something the Browns need to be aware of. If those injuries continue, they'll need to find someone like Baker to potentially replace him.

How Baker would help the Browns

Baker has been the best safety in his eight-year career. In addition to his six Pro Bowl selections, Baker was named to the All Pro First Team twice and the All Pro Second Team once.

He played well for the Arizona Cardinals earlier this year and showed how he could help the Cleveland Browns win in Week 2.

Budda Baker was a total threat last Sunday

At 28, Baker would be another proven veteran for the Browns' defense, which has been one of the best in the NFL in recent seasons.
