Red Sox Hall Of Famer Changes Mind About MLB's 'Pretty Girl'

Former Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz recently did a podcast in the Dominican Republic that garnered some media attention. Hall of Fame receiver and playoff MVP Ortiz called Shohei Ohtani the MLB's “pretty girl.” Ortiz has caused quite a storm with his call-up to the Dodger star and finds himself in a difficult situation. This week on the Dan Patrick Show, Red Sox MVP David Ortiz made it clear that the man has been breaking records with every at-bat this season.

When Ortiz stepped on Ohtanhi

On September 9, before Ohtani broke the 50/50 record, famed Red Sox power hitter Ortiz talked about the MVP race, as Marca reported: “(MLB) has always had… 'problems,' not giving me the MVP to give because I was a designated hitter.” . I'll see what they say this year when MLB's 'pretty girl' Ohtani is in the running.” It was clear the former Red Sox DH was upset about being a contender but on the outside was never voted MVP of the playoffs. Dodger fans were outraged and there was backlash due to this statement from the former Red Sox MVP.

Dan Patrick Show this week

On September 30, David Ortiz sat on The Dan Patrick Show to talk about the playoff race and his thoughts on Ohtanhi. Dan Patrick asks David: “…I noticed you stole a base when you hit 54 HR in a year. What do you remember about that stolen base, David?”

“I got a standing ovation,” Ortiz replies. “That wasn’t my game. The other day I was on a podcast in the Dominican Republic and my statements were completely twisted… I wanted to see how the MLB would do if I didn't get Ohtani an MVP this year because they always viewed me as a one-dimensional player, even though I was the one had numbers.

So Ohtani is a special player, he is unique. I don't think we'll see a guy like that again any time soon, he's a total package. I was looking at his numbers the other day and saw over 50 stolen bases and he got caught about four times. That's stupid. Seriously, if he doesn't get an MVP this year, I think there's something to be said for DH not being allowed to win an MVP.” This clears up the situation somewhat as to where former Red Sox star DH Big Papi stands.

The MLB has never voted a DH regular season MVP, which is what Ortiz is and what he makes clear. The only reason Ortiz has an MVP is because MLB gave it to him in the 2013 playoffs with the Red Sox after he finished with a .688 BA, 2 doubles, 2 home runs and 6 RBIs.

Despite the backlash, it seems like Ortiz actually supports Ohtani, and if you listen to the Dan Patrick Show where he appears, you can tell by his tone that he is deeply impressed with the Dodger. Ortiz further explains the importance of DH on and off the field and there are many things this role does to take the pressure off the clubhouse. Red Sox fans always loved the heart Ortiz brought to Boston, and part of his job was to keep the balance, he revealed.

MLB has big decisions to make

Ohtani posted big numbers this season (54 home runs and 59 stolen bases) while capturing the hearts of baseball fans around the world. If the MLB decides to award Ohtani the MVP this year, they will need to think carefully about what it could mean for the future of the MLB. America considers Ohtani worthy of MVP and no player comes close to his numbers, but if Ortiz is right, the MLB will only view him as a one-dimensional player. Fans will have to wait until after the World Series to find out what direction MLB will take this season.
