Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers having an amazing performance in the 2024 season and winning the MVP award seems like a winning party award.

But not everyone believes that. At least Jimmy Rollins (45), the winner of the 2007 National League MVP award, doesn't think so.

In an interview with “97.3 The Fan”, a San Diego Padres radio station, Rollins said on the 1st (Korean time): “Ohtani is the best player this season, but the most valuable player is Francisco Lindor.” should, not Ohtani.

On March 20, 2024, the “Major League World Tour Seoul Series 2024” took place against the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres at the Gocheok Sky Dome in Seoul. Ohtani of the LA Dodgers hits a pitcher's groundball after one out in the top of the seventh inning.

In 159 games this season, Ohtani had a .310 batting average, .390 on-base percentage, .64654 slugging percentage, home runs, 59 steals and 130 RBIs.

The No. 1 batting average was lost to Luis Arraez (San Diego), but he ranked first in on-base percentage, slugging percentage, home run and RBI. Most importantly, he achieved the league's first 50-50 record.

Rollins also acknowledged the greatness of 50-50, but pointed out Ohtani's limitations, saying, “He only played one side of baseball.”

As he said, Ohtani only played as a designated hitter this season. After elbow surgery after last season, the pitcher was just recovering. Rollins pointed this out.

He said: “I don’t think pitchers should win MVP either. Pitchers have a Cy Young Award. For them it's MVP. The outfield player must contribute to the team every day in both offense and defense. Ohtani said, “That's me.” Only contributed to the attack.”

If Ohtani wins the MVP, he will become the league's first designated hitter to win MVP.

Rollins added, “If the designated hitter gets the MVP, there's bound to be controversy.” Additionally, he argued that Ohtani couldn't be the only exception in an era where historically outstanding designated hitters have been excluded from the MVP vote were rejected.

Instead, he pushed Mets starting shortstop Lindor for an MVP nomination. “The Mets wouldn't have made it to the postseason without him,” he said, after mentioning that he hit a two-run home run in the first game of the doubleheader against the Atlanta Braves, emphasizing that Lindor was a valuable performance for the team showed.

Lindor had a .272 batting average, .344 on-base percentage, .496 slugging percentage, 32 home runs, 88 RBIs and 29 steals in 151 games this season. He was sluggish with a .197 batting average, .280 on-base percentage and .359 slugging percentage in 29 games through April, but later performed well and contributed to the team's advance to the postseason.

A total of 30 voting members, selected by two from each regional branch of the American Baseball Journalists Association (BBWAA), will vote to determine the MVP. It remains to be seen how many of these journalists feel the same way as Rollins.
