Capital Map Convention

Friday afternoon: Iowa's largest card convention takes place for three days at the Iowa Events Center, 730 Third St., Des Moines. The Capital City Card Convention features 224 tables of dealers offering everything from memorabilia to collectibles. Look for celebrities signing autographs and authentications. Tickets start at $15 at the door and children under 15 are free. The show runs from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Des Moines Street Style Open

Friday afternoon: Skateboard fans flock to Des Moines for the Streetstyle Open. Watch technical skills at the Red Bull Manny Mania Contest at Pappajohn Sculpture Park, 1330 Grand Ave., Des Moines, at 6 p.m.; then there's an afterparty at 9 p.m. at SingleSpeed ​​Brewery, 303 Scott Ave., Des Moines, featuring artwork by Taylor Smith, Bryant Doerfler, Sidetracketc, Derrick Lambertz and TJ Armstrong. The open street and park competitions begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Lauridsen Skatepark, 901 Second Ave., Des Moines. For the full schedule, visit skatedsm.org/events/.

Beaverdale Fall Festival

Friday night: Can fall really begin without the Beaverdale Fall Festival? The event kicks off with a car show and then on Saturday there is a dog parade and the traditional main parade. The event runs from 5pm to 11pm on Friday and 9am to 11pm on Saturday and features food trucks, craft vendors, a carnival, trivia games, a bag tournament, an outdoor movie and four stages of live music.

Wine Festival

Friday night: Winefests Grand Tasting will take place again on 22.and year from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Hotel Fort Des Moines, 1000 Walnut St., Des Moines. $90 tickets include unlimited wine tastings, food from local restaurants, live entertainment and photo opportunities. A VIP room offers a lounge area, larger wine pours and exclusive appetizers. Purchase tickets at winefestdesmoines.com.

Brazil vs Mexico in indoor soccer

Friday night: Des Moines United FC brings indoor soccer games to Iowa when the Iowa Demon Hawks of the Major Arena Soccer League 2 take on the Brazilian national team. Tickets for the game at Hy-Vee Hall at the Iowa Events Center, 730 Fourth St., Des Moines, start at $31 for the game, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

“Voix de Ville – A modern variety cabaret”

Friday night: Max Wellman and the crew of Noce, 1326 Walnut St., Des Moines, will perform their new “Voix de Ville – A Modern Vaudeville Cabaret” during a 7 p.m. show featuring original music and new arrangements from the 1920s through the 2020s. It will feature a jazz orchestra led by Jason Danielson, as well as drag and ballet pros. This first performance will feature Wellman, along with Napoleon Douglas, dancers Amelia and Logan Hillman, drag queens Tyona Diamond and Domita Sanchez and others. Tickets start at $25.

“Jersey Boys” – The return of the superheroes

Friday night: “Oh, what a night!” Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons went from a du-wop group to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The jukebox musical “Jersey Boys” follows the group's 40-year friendship with a collection of hits such as “Sherry,” “Big Girls Don't Cry,” “Walk Like a Man,” “Can't Take My Eyes Off You” and many others played over the years. See it at the Des Moines Community Playhouse, 831 42nd St., Des Moines, at 7:30 p.m., with performances through Sept. 29. Tickets start at $29.

Iowa's Latino Heritage Festival

Saturday morning: The Iowa Latino Heritage Festival brings two days of art exhibits, Latino food vendors and Latino music performances to the John & Mary Pappajohn Sculpture Park, Western Gateway Park, 1330 Grand Ave., Des Moines. The free event runs from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. For the full schedule, visit latinoheritagefestival.org/festival.

In-house exhibition Expo 2024

Saturday afternoon: Check out the features in nine homes at Shadow Creek West, 1455 NW Douglas Parkway, Clive, during the Home Show Expo. Tickets are $5-$20 for the 10 a.m.-8 p.m. exhibit hosted by the Home Builders Association of Greater Des Moines. Runs through Sept. 29 at various times and days.

Phantom Fall Festival

Saturday afternoon: Spooky season kicks off with Phantom Fall Fest at Adventureland Park, 3200 Adventureland Drive, Altoona. Fans can hop on the rides and then get further scares in four haunted houses. Prices start at $29.99 and up. Gates are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and then on various days through Oct. 27. White Eagle Multicultural Powwow

Saturday afternoon: Visit Jester Park, 12130 NW 128th St., Granger, for the White Eagle Multicultural Powwow. Learn through food, music, dance and storytelling from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Bring your family and enjoy the food, booths and performances at this free outdoor event. Donations will be accepted in the Memory Tent.

Oktoberfest

Saturday afternoon: Cheers! Hessen Haus, 101 SW Fourth St., Des Moines, is celebrating 20 years of Oktoberfest with traditional German food, beer, giveaways, special offers and more. Stop by from 11 a.m. through Oct. 6. Hear live music from 6 to 8 p.m. with Fritz Schnitzel's Walkabout Polkas.

Knotfest

Saturday afternoon: Slipknot is celebrating its 25th anniversary in Des Moines, bringing Knotfest Iowa 2024 to Lauridsen Amphitheater at Water Works Park, 2251 George Flagg Parkway, Des Moines from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. The heavy metal lineup includes Slipknot as headliner, plus Till Lindemann, Knocked Loose, Hatebreed, Poison The Well, Gwar, Vended, Dying Wish, Zulu, Twin Temple, Holy Wars, Swollen Teeth, SPINE and Dose on two stages. KC and the Sunshine Band

Saturday night: The band behind timeless hits such as “Get Down Tonight,” “That's The Way (I Like It)” and “Shake Your Booty” emerged in the 1970s with funky disco songs. In recent years, KC and the Sunshine Band have released a covers album and an album of Christmas music. See the Grammy-winning band at 7:30 p.m. at the Hoyt Sherman Place, 1501 Woodland Ave., Des Moines. Tickets start at $56 on ticketmaster.com.

The forbidden car

Sunday afternoon: The Banned Wagon will stop in Des Moines at Beaverdale Books, 2629 Beaver Ave., to provide hundreds of free copies of banned or controversial books to fight censorship. Afternoon speakers include Sara Parris, founder and president of Annie's Foundation, at 2 p.m., and Christy Hickman, general counsel of the Iowa State Education Association, at 3 p.m.

Andrea Domenici and Steve Davis

Sunday afternoon: Witness Italian pianist Andrea Domenici return to the stage at Caspe Terrace, 33158 Ute Ave., Waukee, from 2 to 4 p.m., accompanied by trombonist Steve Davis. A dessert reception with artist-meet-the-artist greeting will follow the concert. Tickets are $30 in advance and $35 at the door.

Des Moines Community Classic

Sunday evening: Watch the Utah Hockey Club play the St. Louis Blues at Wells Fargo Arena, 730 Third St., Des Moines. It will be the first competitive game for the expansion team since the NHL established a franchise in Utah in April 2024. It will be the St. Louis Blues' second preseason game at the arena, having faced the Minnesota Wild in 2018. Tickets for the 6 p.m. game start at $20.
