5 lessons from the Packers' win over the Titans

NASHVILLE – Backup QB Malik Willis won his second consecutive start in place of Jordan Love as the Packers defeated the Titans 30-14 on Sunday at Nissan Stadium.

Green Bay is now 2-1 and here are five takeaways from the triumph:

  1. Willis was better than last week.

Returning to his old stomping grounds in Nashville, Willis had to do more for the Packers' offense than he did a week ago, when the Green Bay Packers' running game completely controlled the action.

The Packers still ran the ball well (188 rushing yards), but Willis converted several third down attempts with crucial throws, used his own legs to move the ball early, and didn't lose it for the second game in a row.

“That's the quarterback's most important job, to take care of the football,” said head coach Matt LaFleur. “He did a great job of not putting the ball in danger. That allowed us to create some opportunities.”

A third-down conversion on the first possession after a deep pass to Christian Watson set the stage for a pair of third-and-longs for Romeo Doubs and Watson (two catches, 67 yards) later in the first half. Willis' sparkling 120.9 passer rating included 13 completions on 19 attempts for 202 yards and a TD.

He also utilized the zone read on running plays and a few scrambles and led the team with 73 rushing yards on six attempts, all in the first half.

“It gives everyone 100 percent more confidence in what they’re doing,” LaFleur said of the early success.

“I can't say enough about him, just the work he's done to come into our offense and be productive.”

“Hats off to him, hats off to everyone around him, guys who come together to watch his back.”
