The 49ers begin the kicker search as Jake Moody battles a high ankle sprain

The quick turnaround to the San Francisco 49ers' Thursday Night Football matchup against the Seattle Seahawks doesn't leave much time for anything other than turning the page on Sunday's 24-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals. With four days separating game days, the 49ers will not be going full throttle at any point this week, and the coaching staff was in the middle of game preparation for their next NFC West opponent almost immediately after the end of regulation in Week 5.

“We would like to sit here and be angry. We would like to be able to do something about what just happened,” head coach Kyle Shanahan said in his postgame press conference on Sunday. “But there’s nothing you can do about these games once they’re over. I tell the guys that next time we can do something on Thursday, and that it's better to just wait until Thursday… It will come quickly, but whenever you have a game on Thursday night, we always say, The most important thing is rest and relaxation.”

The immediate need for the team entering Thursday night is a kick as second-year special teamer Jake Moody suffered a severe ankle sprain in the first half against the Cardinals. Moody took off after San Francisco's blocked field goal touchdown and fell while attacking Arizona's kick returner. The 49ers kicker was able to move halfway across the field before hopping onto the bench on one leg. Shortly afterwards he was carted off the sidelines.

In addition to preparing for the team's upcoming game, the scouting department and coaching staff are also working to find a backup kicker to fill in while Moody recovers.

“I think four guys will be added throughout the day,” Shanahan said. “I know the guys are just working on finishing this game and getting started on the whole Seattle stuff in the short week. I didn't catch their names.
