Pak vs Eng, 1st Test – Jeetan Patel – England's 'high-end work' keeps them in contention in the first Test

England's comeback in the final training session on the first day of back-to-back Tests in Multan was “a hell of an effort” due to their “high-performance work”. So said Jeetan Patel, one of their assistant coaches, who said England were “pretty happy” with their position as Pakistan reached 328 for 4 at the end of the game.
Abdullah Shafique and Shan Masood added 253 for the second wicket after Saim Ayub was dismissed cheaply and Pakistan had reached 261 for 1 at the start of the last session. But after the set batters – both of whom made hundreds – fell softly to Gus Atkinson and Jack Leach, Chris Woakes had Babar Azam lbw late in the day to give England support on a flat surface.

“I couldn’t praise her more,” Patel said. “I think the effort they put in today was first class: the way they tried different things to take wickets, the different fields they had, the way they fielded . To take those three wickets tonight was a testament to the work they had put in. “In the first two sessions we were pretty happy with the result as they were four down.

There was no shade from the sun at any time of the day and Patel praised England's performances on the field. “The boys have been heating all day,” he said. “In the past it would have put a lot of people down. But we're talking about the positive moments… The guys came out of that third session knowing what they had to do but also with enough energy to be able to make it happen.

“I’m really proud that (they) went through this. It's pretty hot out there. It was quite docile at times. We probably expected (the ball) to do a little bit more this morning. That wasn't the case, but.” That's fine. We will find out tomorrow and find out whether it does the same or not. But it was a pretty strong day for the boys.

Patel suggested a strong start to Tuesday's game would take England to the top. “We always talk about putting two (wickets) on it: how does the game change?” he said. “Now you have a night guard, so maybe we could add three… 350 for 7? We’ll just see what happens when we hit because we don’t really know.”

With James Anderson missing the start of the tour to take part in a Pro-Am golf tournament in Scotland, Patel had to train with England's fast bowlers before the first Test. Anderson is due to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday after Brendon McCullum played down the impact of his absence on Sunday.

“Two months ago you said he didn’t deserve to be a coach yet,” McCullum told Sky Sports. “Now it's 'We miss him' – and I think that's a great acknowledgment of how much of an impact Jimmy Anderson has made in a short space of time. He has set up (WhatsApp) groups with the bowlers and is always feeding information about Jeetan Patel.

“We live in a world where you can still communicate without having to face each other in person… I have no concerns at all. I'm absolutely delighted for him that he's getting the opportunity to do something he loves and when he gets the opportunity.” He'll be right in the thick of things here, just as he has been since he took over as bowling coach.
