Qantas apologizes after an explicit film was broadcast on all screens during its flight from Sydney to Tokyo

In the long list of problems with in-flight entertainment, passengers on a recent flight from Sydney to Tokyo may have faced a new one: a sexually explicit film playing on every screen.

Australian airline Qantas has now apologized following the incident during a flight last week.

Due to technical issues, selecting individual films was not possible, so at the request of some passengers, a film was selected from a limited list for the entire flight, the airline said.

However, the film turned out to be “Daddio,” an R-rated film containing profanity, sexual material and brief graphic nudity.

“The movie they played was extremely inappropriate,” wrote one passenger on Reddit, who said they were on the flight from Sydney to Tokyo's Haneda Airport. “It was impossible to stop, dim or turn it off.”

“It featured graphic nudity and a lot of sexting – the kind where you could literally read the text on the screen without needing headphones,” the person said. “It took them almost an hour to switch to a more kid-friendly film, but it was super uncomfortable for everyone, especially with families and children on board.”

In response, Qantas apologized.

“The film was clearly not suitable to be played throughout the flight and we sincerely apologize to our customers for this experience,” the airline said in a statement.

“For the remainder of the flight, all screens were switched to a family-friendly film, which is our standard practice for the rare occasions when individual film selection is not possible,” it added.

“We are checking how the film was selected.”
