Manny Machado and Jack Flaherty discuss the altercation in the Dodgers' Game 2 loss

Tensions between Jack Flaherty and Manny Machado heated up Sunday in Game 2 of the National League Division Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres. During the game, Flaherty and Machado were shown exchanging words several times.

The conversation began after Flaherty struck out Machado in the sixth inning. Their exchange continued after Machado threw a ball into the Dodgers dugout in the bottom half of the inning, nearly hitting Dodgers manager Dave Roberts.

“I was ecstatic after I got Manny out (in the first inning). “It's a big playoff spot,” Flaherty told reporters after the game. “This is what’s happening.” I was hooked. Well, yes. And then he did some stuff between innings where he tried to throw the ball into our dugout. Everyone saw how he and I did it, but I was there for my team. I wouldn't attack him. He threw at our dugout. … I get it, it’s the offseason, everyone’s excited about it.”

Machado defended his throw. “I throw balls in the dugout all the time,” he said.

Roberts said Monday, via The Athletic, that he saw the video of Machado's throw and called it “disturbing.” Roberts added that there was “intention” behind the throw.

“I wouldn’t have said anything if it had been a throw,” Dodgers starter Jack Flaherty said, via The Athletic.

“Emotions are running high,” Flaherty said. “I get it. But I won't be fooled.”

Machado was also unhappy after Padres teammate Fernando Tatis Jr. was hit by a pitch from Flaherty, causing more argument between the two players and adding to the tense atmosphere at Dodger Stadium.

Flaherty eventually singled out Machado as the game progressed, striking him out in the sixth inning. Machado recorded his only goal of the game only after Flaherty was eliminated.

Flaherty didn't have the same success against the rest of the Padres lineup – he allowed home runs to Tatis and David Peralta. Overall, Flaherty gave up five hits and four earned runs. Machado may not have had the best night, but his team picked up the win and evened the series at 1-1 before the NLDS moved to Petco Park for Games 3 and 4.
