Igor Shesterkin is reportedly turning down the Rangers' record-breaking contract

Igor Shesterkin has turned down an eight-year, $88 million contract with the New York Rangers, according to ESPN's Kevin Weeks.

That contract would have paid him $11 million per season and made him the highest-paid goaltender in NHL history.

This comes days after Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman stated that the Rangers would pay Shesterkin as it was only a matter of time.

“I believe it will work,” Friedman said. “I think the Rangers have made the decision to pay him and for me it's just a matter of what the numbers are going to be. “Until I'm told otherwise, I expect them to work out. Turn it off. I think the Rangers made their choice here.”

If Shesterkin wants more than $11 million, what exactly does he want?

Mollie Walker of the New York Post wrote this summer that Shesterkin's camp is seeking up to $12 million a year, and given that bombshell news from Weeks, there seems to be some truth to that previous report.

Despite a report that said the Rangers would stop negotiations until next summer if a deal is not reached by the start of the regular season, the Rangers are not moving away from the announced deadline, according to NHL insider Frank Seravalli impress the conclusion of a deal with Shesterkin.

The Rangers have reportedly made their move, so all eyes are now on Shesterkin.
