Democrat Adam Schiff and Republican Steve Garvey last met on the debate stage ahead of the March primary, where they were joined by two other Democratic challengers. Tuesday's debate will be the first and likely only time since the primary that Garvey and Schiff will make their case to voters.

Who is running in the race for the US Senate seat in California?

California voters elected Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff and Republican baseball legend Steve Garvey in the 2024 primary to compete for one of the state's two U.S. Senate seats in November.

The two are vying for California's first open Senate seat in several years, left vacant after the death of Sen. Dianne Feinstein in 2023. Gov. Gavin Newsom soon appointed Democrat Laphonza Butler to the seat, but she declined to run and will cede to the winning candidate.

Because of Feinstein's death, Californians will vote for their chosen candidate twice in November – once for the remainder of Feinstein's term, until January 2025, and a second time for a full six-year term, until 2031.
