A man camps out hoping to witness Tropicana's implosion in person

Joshua Ehrenfeld is a Las Vegas history buff and a long-time fan of the company responsible for the implosion of the Tropicana.

The relatively new Las Vegas resident camped out with a friend in hopes of seeing the now-demolished hotel and casino demolished in person.

“What I like about Controlled Demolition, Inc. (CDI) is that if you watch one of their shows, they actually sit there and explain everything. There are many documentaries about when they were at the Frontier, when they opened hotels in Miami or when “They sat there and explained the technical aspect,” Ehrenfeld said.

He said he began documenting progress on his YouTube page over the summer as crews gutted the hotel and casino and prepared it for implosion.

“Even before they announced it, I said they were probably going to drop the Paradise Tower's inward-wrapped cable and pull it away from the boulevard and then let the Club Tower fall flat on its front, which is what they end up doing “” he said.

He says he saw on video every hotel the company imploded.

“My favorite was the dunes in 1993 when they fired the cannons from Treasure Island to collapse the dunes. This is by far my favorite.”

Ehrenfeld said he started planning and figuring out where the best views would be the implosion of the hotela year ago.

He and his friend camped and made signs for hours before the historic event at 2:30 a.m.

“We have coolers full of water, sodas, Gatorade and a few beers, you know the typical Las Vegas campout.”

Since there is no official area for in-person viewing, the pair are aware they may be moved elsewhere, but hope to stay near the intersection of Mandalay Bay Road and Las Vegas Blvd to ensure they are can see history being torn down.
