Uvalde releases newly discovered videos from 2022 school shooting

Two and a half years after the deadly 2022 mass shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, new police videos from that day have just been released. The dashcam and bodycam videos show emotions running high at the crime scene.

These new additions were only discovered after a police officer reviewing the publicly available videos discovered that his bodycam video was missing. An investigation into the delayed release resulted in a Uvalde Police Department employee being placed on administrative leave in connection with the investigation. We learned that the employee retired two days later.

A review of footage from that day found 10 bodycam videos and 39 dashcam videos that had not been released as ordered. The clips show distraught officials at Robb Elementary, upset about the long delay to take action. And they show officers comforting their colleagues as the death toll was revealed.

In state hearings shortly after the school shooting, leadership of the Texas Police Chiefs Association publicly apologized for the botched response.

Chief Stan Standridge of the San Marcos Police Department said, “I have never heard a person say I am sorry. And I want to start by expressing my condolences to the parents who lost the unimaginable and the spouses. Jimmy and I want to tell you that our profession failed that day.”

Chief Jimmy Perdue of North Richland Hills agreed: “What happened in Uvalde is not acceptable behavior in the eyes of law enforcement in the state of Texas. “We didn't train for that.”

Texas DPS Director Steve McCraw publicly admitted in 2022 that the response to Uvalde was a “miserable failure.” But he later told state lawmakers that the Texas DPS — as an institution — had not failed the community.

He didn't mention Uvalde when he recently announced his retirement. McCraw will leave DPS at the end of the year.
