Saints rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler will make his first NFL start on Sunday against Tampa Bay

While Allen said Carr will return to the starting lineup when he returns and Haener didn't rule out him being in the starting lineup at some point, he said Rattler shouldn't have to worry about him being on the leash on Sunday.

“I think you have to let the guy go in there and play,” Allen said. “We're not going into this game saying, 'You make a mistake and we're going to pull you.' He'll play, he'll manage the team, and we'll go from there.

“You don’t want to go into this like it’s some big ordeal. He's next man up, get the opportunity to go in and play. Go play and have fun, do what you were trained to do.”

“I think sometimes you can make too much of it and create a bigger problem than you really need. We go over the things he needs to know, we prepare him and then we let him go out there and play.”

Despite being the emergency quarterback for five games, Allen said Rattler impressed in practice.

“He competes against us every day on the 'exhibition' team and has athletic ability, he can throw the ball, he's accurate, he makes some plays on the scout team,” Allen said. “I just think this is a guy who…” He has great skill and is definitely a rookie. So we know we're going to have some challenges ahead of us, but I think we have a good plan for him and we're looking forward to getting out and playing.

“He did a good job for us on the show team. He made some really good plays against our defense. He made some difficult throws and his mobility was good.”

“It will be our job as coaches to put him in the best possible position to be successful.”
