Archive.org, a repository that stores the entire history of the Internet, has been hacked

Archive.org, perhaps one of the few companies that preserves the entire history of the Internet, was recently compromised in a hack that exposed data on around 31 million users.

Shortly after 2 p.m. California time, social media exploded with screenshots showing what was displayed on the archive.org homepage.

Have you ever felt like the Internet Archive is on hold, constantly on the verge of a catastrophic security breach? It just happened. See 31 million of you on HIBP!

HIBP is short for Have I been Pwned, the definitive breach notification website that helps people protect their accounts after they've been compromised.

The news didn't last long. Shortly after it appeared, when archive.org even loaded, it displayed a message saying the site was temporarily unavailable. The site later returned. Archive.org's Brewster Kahle said on the faulty website that the site had fallen victim to a DDoS attack.

Now Have I Been Pwnd reports that archive.org has been hacked. HIBP said the compromise occurred last month and exposed 31 million records containing email addresses, screen names and bcrypt hashed passwords.
