Local baseball coach looks back on his son's success in the MLB before the NLDS

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – A local coach and his family will be rooting for their son Tommy Edman with the Los Angeles Dodgers during the NLDS. John Edman has been the baseball coach at La Jolla Country Day School for 26 years and he says some of his proudest moments have been when his son was on the team.

“It’s just a huge blessing; There’s no other way to put it,” says John Edman.

Before becoming a major utility player in Major League Baseball, Tommy Edman worked extensively at LJCDS between 2010 and 2013. John calls his son a hard worker who just wants to win.

“People have asked him quite a bit, what position do you prefer? And his answer is always: I will play wherever I am supposed to play if it helps the team win.”

It's been a journey for Tommy that began as long as John could remember: from Little League and club baseball to La Jolla Country Day, to Standford University and now to MLB.

“He was just always a very smart player who was completely team-oriented,” John says. “He was humble, had some talent and just did a lot of things well on the ball field.”

Her entire family has long been all about baseball. Now that Tommy is joining the boys in blue to help them push for the playoffs this year, it's nice to take a moment to reflect on how far his son has come.

“We are of course very proud. The only thing you can want for your family is for them to be a light to other people in their lives in one way or another. And I definitely see him that way,” says the father of three.

Tommy was even inducted into the La Jolla Country Day Hall of Fame for future generations, especially at a school that educates students as young as three years old.

“Even the little kids know about him, and they'll be out here in gym class and see me and look over and call his name, and that's kind of nice,” John says. “With the work he does, he is simply a good example for everyone. And I mean, he’s just a good person, to be honest.”

The Dodgers face the San Diego Padres in Game 1 of the NLDS on Saturday at 5:38 p.m
