Manager of the Miami Marlins is expected to be a free agent after the end of the season

The Miami Marlins have had a terrible season and enter Sunday's game with an overall record of 57-98. That's the second-worst record in all of baseball, better than only the historically worst Chicago White Sox.

Not only has the team struggled with massive injuries this year, but they will also need a new manager next season.

Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported Sunday that Skip Schumaker is expected to become a free agent in the offseason.

Marlins manager Skip Schumaker, who was widely praised for his decision not to pitch around Shohei Ohtani on his record-breaking 50-home-run, 50-steal day last week, is expected to inform the Marlins that he is officially leaving the team after the season, becoming the most sought-after free-agent manager in baseball.

Schumaker, 44, spent two years with the Marlins and was named National League Manager of the Year in 2023. He led the Marlins to the playoffs this season, but the team has waned this year following injuries to Eury Perez, Sandy Alcantara, Braxton Garrett, Jesus Luzardo and Edward Cabrera. In addition, the organization traded Luis Arraez earlier this season.

Nightengale is right: There will be plenty of competition for Schumaker and there could be several teams that need new managers. The White Sox are already looking for a new captain and there are doubts as to whether Dan Wilson is really the long-term solution for the Seattle Mariners.

Additionally, the Cincinnati Reds and Toronto Blue Jays could make changes after disappointing seasons, and an opportunity could arise with the Pittsburgh Pirates. Schumaker played for the St. Louis Cardinals, and they too could be looking for a new leader. And finally, openings could open up with the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Yankees if they fail in the playoffs.
