Javier Baez returns to the dugout to support his teammates during the ALDS

DETROIT – Keen-eyed television viewers spotted a familiar face in the Detroit Tigers dugout for Game 2 of the Division Series in Cleveland.

Veteran shortstop Javier Baez, who went on the injured list in late August and subsequently underwent season-ending hip surgery, has rejoined his teammates for the playoffs.

“Javy was in Puerto Rico taking care of some family matters and then flew to Detroit, drove to Cleveland with his family yesterday, and now he's back in Detroit and will be here tomorrow (for Game 3),” said Tigers manager AJ Hinch.

Baez underwent rehab in Detroit during the final month of the regular season and was on the field for the year-end team photo with crutches.

The Tigers' incredible run since his injury, coupled with the outstanding play of rookie Trey Sweeney, has led to questions about Baez's future with the Tigers.

It's also unclear whether Baez will even be healthy for spring training given the recovery time he needs from his hip surgery.

Regardless of what happens, he remains a popular presence in the Tigers clubhouse.

“I was in the training room and I saw him come in and I mean, everyone in the training room kind of went crazy,” Tigers utility man Matt Vierling said. “Everyone loves Javy. He is such a good presence for us. He's a great guy. And having him there and making the effort to drive over and come to the game meant a lot to us.

“It's really great to have him around now because of the experience he has in moments like this, but also that he just takes everyone along and everyone loves him.”
