The San Diego Padres are a supremely talented, confident team that came into the NLDS as one of the hottest groups in baseball, winning 13 of their last 17 contests. You don't need much help to win games these days.

But in the bottom of the second inning Tuesday night, the Los Angeles Dodgers gave them more than a little help.

The Padres managed six runs in that frame, helped by a throwing error by Freddie Freeman and the Dodgers' inability to put out a single baserunner on a double play attempt. Fernando Tatís Jr. capped the pitch with a two-run blast, giving the Padres enough offense to earn a 6-5 victory.

Teoscar Hernández did his best to keep the Dodgers in contention by hitting a grand slam in the fourth.

But the damage was done. Over the final four innings, four San Diego relievers delivered the game's decisive win, allowing just one hit and striking out six, and the Padres survived a one-run classic.

After the game, Dodgers fans and pundits alike pointed out the errors in the second inning that opened the door for San Diego's offensive outburst:

The mistakes at the beginning of the game will bite the dodges in the butt

The Padres now lead the series 2-1 and can knock off the Dodgers on Wednesday at Petco Park. The stakes couldn't be higher for these Dodgers – the Padres are on the verge of not only knocking out the Dodgers for the second time in the last three years, but also ensuring the Dodgers go winless for the third straight year in their playoff series .

To save their season, the Dodgers must first do the little things right. Mistakes and mental errors can lead to massive innings against an overloaded lineup like this Padres', and that was the difference on Tuesday.
