An equipment malfunction at a Colorado gold mine traps more than 10 people

According to the Teller County Sheriff's Office and Denver7, more than ten people are trapped underground at a Colorado gold mine on Pikes Peak after an equipment malfunction.

The sheriff's office responded to an equipment malfunction at Mollie Kathleen Mine, a tourist destination near Cripple Creek, starting at 2 p.m., agency officials said in a post on Facebook.

According to reports from Denver7, more than 10 people are trapped 1,000 feet deep in the mine and 11 people have been rescued so far.

Gov. Jared Polis is monitoring the situation “closely” and state emergency responders are on scene to take further action, the governor’s office said in a news release.

“The state is supporting Teller County and providing resources to save the people at the mine. We will do everything possible and support the county to ensure a quick and safe resolution of the situation,” Polis said in a statement.

According to the tour operator's website, the now-defunct mine offers hour-long tours that take visitors 1,000 feet down the shaft to the southwest side of Pikes Peak.

The mine has offered tours in various formats since it opened in the 1890s, with mine tours becoming the focus after production ceased in 1961.
