The Columbus Blue Jackets are preparing for the emotional start to the season

COLUMBUS, Ohio – As the Columbus Blue Jackets prepare for their season opener, the team and its fans are preparing for an emotional journey. The tragic death of Johnny Gaudreau has had a significant impact on the organization.

“I don't think Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew will be in the thoughts and prayers of everyone here, especially the team, all season long,” Blue Jackets radio play-by-play announcer Bob McElligott said. “They will be honored with a sticker and will be remembered all year long.”

The team faces the Minnesota Wild on Thursday, marking the start of a season full of hope and uncertainty. Injuries to key players Dimitri Voronkov and Boone Jenner have compounded the challenges. They also placed promising second-year forward Gavin Brindley on injured reserve.

But newcomers like Sean Monahan and the development of young talent like Adam Fantilli, Kent Johnson and Cole Sillinger are promising.

McElligott acknowledged the changes brought by new head coach Dean Everson and general manager Don Waddell. “Dean Everson is a new voice for this team and has been really good. I really like how he’s come in and established himself,” he said. “Don Waddell, the GM, quickly assessed things and made some changes to prepare for the future.”

Despite the hurdles, McElligott remains optimistic about the team's potential. “Without the loss of Johnny Gaudreau before the season started, I expected that if this team didn't make the playoffs, it would be on the cusp at least through the end of the season,” McElligott said. “I don’t think it’s far away.”

The Blue Jackets return to Nationwide Arena for their home opener on October 15, which will also feature a celebration of the Gaudreau family. The team and its fans hope for a season that honors their memory and brings success on the ice.

The Oct. 17 game against Buffalo will feature the traditional opening ceremonies.
