Cleveland Guardians MLB playoffs result today vs. Detroit Tigers, Game 4

DETROIT – It was win and win for the Guardians on Thursday night.

Facing elimination on Thursday, the Guardians cruised to a 5-4 victory over the Tigers to send the best-of-five series back to Cleveland.

After a 3-0 shutout loss in Game 3 of the American League Division Series that extended their scoreless streak to 20 innings, the Guardians scored immediately. From then on, they struggled to force a decisive Game 5.

Here's how Game 4 unfolded based on our live updates.

Emmanuel Clase earned the five-out save and the Guardians won 5-4 in Game 4 to force a winner-take-all Game 5 on Saturday at Progressive Field. Before Thursday's win, Cleveland hadn't won a postseason game since Game 6 of the 1997 World Series and was facing elimination.

The series returns to Cleveland for a winner-take-all fifth game on Saturday at 8:08 p.m.

Justyn-Henry Malloy doubled down the left field line to start the inning.

Parker Meadows followed with a groundout to right, moving Malloy to third.

Then Jace Jung hit another groundout to make it 5-4 for Malloy, but it was the second out.

With runners on the corners and one out, David Fry laid down a bunt at the first-base line (Steven Kwan was pinned to first, leaving first baseman Matt Vierling too far away to catch it).

Pitcher Will Vest had to go, and Brayan Rocchio beat the throw with a nice slide at the plate.

There are 5-3 guards.

Emmanuel Clase avoided the goal threat.

After a ground ball was the second out, but also a play that put the run in scoring position, Clase struck out Trey Sweeney to end the inning.

Clase batted his glove as he left the mound. Stephen Vogt, manager of the Guardians, is very excited in the dugout.

Riley Greene led off the eighth with a single and one out, and Wenceel Perez also singled to put two runners on base and put the game-winning run in scoring position.

And that will prompt the Guardians to turn to Emmanuel Clase to try and record the final five outs.

The Guardians almost extended their insurance run twice in the eighth round, but came up just short.

First, Will Brennan narrowly missed a home run, sending a ball into the wall in right field for a double. Andres Gimenez followed with a hard-hit ground ball to the right side that was tied up thanks to a great jump play by Colt Keith, who stood up and made a throw to save a run.

The Guardians lead 4-3 at the end of the eighth quarter. Tim Herrin comes into play and Emmanuel Clase won't be far behind.

David Fry has just delivered the biggest blow of the season for the Guardians.

Fry was deployed as a pinch-hitter with a runner and led off with a two-run home run to left field that gave the Guardians a 4-3 lead in the seventh inning.

In Game 3, the Guardians made similar close calls. While it didn't work out, the logic was sound as they tried to exploit high-leverage situations. It worked wonderfully tonight.

This is the first close home run in team history, giving Cleveland the lead in the postseason.

With two outs in the seventh, Steven Kwan singled up the middle. The Guardians announced that David Fry would hit for Kyle Manzardo, leading the Tigers to use right-hander Beau Brieske.

With two outs, Wenceel Perez hit a single to shallow left-center field, scoring a run and giving the Tigers their first lead of the night.

Gaddis then struck out Zach McKinstry to load the bases, but Trey Sweeney followed with an inning-ending groundout.

The Tigers lead the Guardians 3-2. Cleveland has nine outs to save its season.

Cade Smith entered this series tonight with 10 batters and 10 recorded outs.

In the sixth inning, he gave up a single to Kerry Carpenter and singled to Riley Greene with one out to put up two – the first time Smith has looked human in the series. Hunter Gaddis finds himself in a huge situation when he takes on Colt Keith.

Cade Smith is on a pretty unreal path. He came into the game for Bibee and struck out the first three batters he faced.

The Guardians could actually have the two best relievers in baseball in the same bullpen.

A batter in the fifth inning, Zach McKinstry offset Jose Ramirez's home run with a solo shot of his own, an opposite-field home run that just cleared the wall in left field.

Tanner Bibee was confused as to how it got to the opposite field.

And that's enough for Bibee's day. Cade Smith comes in after hitting a home run.

The score is 2-2. Twice the Guardians took a one-run lead, and twice the Tigers answered.

Jose Ramirez hit a solo home run to left field off Tigers reliever Tyler Holton to give the Guardians a 2-1 lead in the fifth inning.

The Guardians desperately needed Ramirez to be more productive in this series. He started this attack only 1 for 11, and the one hit was probably an error that was later converted into a hit. This ball was drilled with an exit velocity of 109.9 miles per hour.

Riley Greene led off the fourth with a single, but with one out, Spencer Torkelson grounded out in the bottom of the inning on a 4-6-3 double play.

Reese Olson went four innings with only one run allowed. Brayan Rocchio singled and ended the fourth with a caught line drive to right field.

Olson went through the lineup twice and faced 18 batters. There's a good chance his day is over and the top of the Guardians franchise will be in the fifth game.

The Guardians and Tigers remain tied 1-1 after the third round. Bibee had an easier inning in the third inning, which may have been necessary so he could get a little comfortable with the Guardians' active bullpen.

The Guardians put a lot of runners on base again, but they couldn't find the right hit to get the win.

Two singles in the third go unharmed after Olson strikes out Will Brennan and the inning still ends tied 1-1.

The Tigers tied it up, but it might be a scenario the Guardians would be happy to accept given the circumstances.

After Detroit loaded the bases with no one out, Trey Sweeney tied it at 1-1 with a sacrifice fly to center field. Then Jake Rogers put a ball right to shortstop Brayan Rocchio, who was able to throw it to Andres Gimenez at second base, making for an easy — and lucky for Cleveland — double play.

The score is 1-1 in the third inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, the Tigers have a golden chance to score.

Two walks wrapped around a single loaded the bases with no one out. Bibee had to work a lot this inning and is now up to 33 pitches for the game.

Trey Sweeney is up. Cade Smith warms up in the bullpen.

Parker Meadows opened the end of the first with a broken-hitter double against a shallow pitch to right-center, but failed to score the second as Tanner Bibee recovered to strike out the Tigers' next three batters in order.

The Guardians lead 1-0 after one inning.

The Guardians' scoreless streak is over and Cleveland has an early lead in Game 4.

Steven Kwan and Kyle Manzardo opened the game with back-to-back singles off Tigers opener Reese Olson. Jose Ramirez singled and Josh Naylor struck out, but Lane Thomas came through for the Guardians with a two-out RBI single to right field to make it 1-0.
