More cities, states and universities are replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day, also known as Native American Day.

With Indigenous Peoples Day and Columbus Day just around the corner, you may be wondering what's open and closed on the holidays.

Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day fall on Monday, October 14th this year.

Columbus Day is a federal holiday commemorating the arrival of Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in America in 1492.

However, due to the disastrous consequences for indigenous peoples of exploring the New World, many states and cities instead celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day to honor indigenous peoples. In New England, Vermont and Maine officially observe Indigenous Peoples Day, and Rhode Island recognizes both holidays. Indigenous Peoples Day is not a federal holiday, but President Joe Biden has issued a proclamation recognizing Indigenous Peoples Day for the past three years.

Here's what to expect to be open and closed due to the holiday.

Are post offices, FedEx and UPS open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

All post offices will be closed this Monday, October 14th and there will be no regular mail delivery.

FedEx Express and FedEx Ground Economy have modified services for Columbus Day, but all other deliveries are normal. You can send packages every day as usual.

UPS pickup and delivery services are available. However, due to the USPS federal holiday, please expect a one-day delay in UPS SurePost and UPS Mail Innovations deliveries. UPS Store locations are open.

Are banks open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

Bank of America, Wells Fargo and Citibank branches will close. However, in honor of Indigenous Peoples Day, Chase Bank and TD Bank will remain open.

Are federal and state offices closed on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

Federal and state offices in Vermont are closed for the holiday.

Are schools open?

Public schools will be closed, but this may vary by district.

Are retail stores open on Columbus Day and Indigenous Peoples Day?

Most major retail stores will be open for the holidays, including staples like Walmart, Target, Home Depot and Lowes.
