Coldplay secures their biggest week for a British act in three years with their tenth number one album, Moon Music

It means Moon Music has the biggest first week for a UK album in three years since Adele's 30 debuted at No. 1 in 2021 with 261,000 chart units. Moon Music is second only to Taylor Swift's The Tortured Poets Department this year, which takes the title of the biggest first week of 2024 overall, having recorded 270,000 UK chart units in its first seven days of sales.

Moon Music is also the fastest-selling album (physical and download) since Adele's 30; Coldplay manages over 209,000 pure sales. 30 recorded 218,000 in its opening week.

Coldplay now joins ABBA, Michael Jackson and Queen on the list of acts with the most number 1 hits in the official album charts (10 each). The band previously topped the charts with Parachutes (2000), A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), X&Y (2005), Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), Mylo Xyloto (2011) and Ghost Stories ( 2014), A Head Full of Dreams (2015), Everyday Life (2019) and Music of the Spheres (2021).

Meanwhile, Sabrina Carpenter's sixth album Short N' Sweet is showing its staying power, rising one to No. 2 this week.

The London-founded alternative rock outfit Public Service Broadcasting, consisting of J. Willgoose Esq., Wrigglesworth, JF Abraham and Mr B, secures their third top 10 LP with The Last Flight (3). The album joins 2017's “Every Valley” (4) and 2021's “Bright Magic” (2) in their top 10 hat trick.

It's the fourth top 5 album for James Bay this week, as his fourth studio album “Changes All The Time” makes its debut (4). The Hitchin-born singer-songwriter previously had success with 2015's Chaos and the Calm (1), 2018's Electric Light (2) LP and 2022's Leap (4). Changes All The Time also tops the Official Record Shop Charts this week, the best-selling album in the last seven days in independent UK record shops.

The Smile, consisting of Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead as well as Tom Skinner, get a third top 10 album with “Cutouts” (7), joining “A Light for Attracting Attention” (5) from the year 2022 and “Wall of Eyes” (3) from 2024.

Billericay-born singer-songwriter Alison Moyet celebrates her highest chart release in 11 years as her tenth studio LP Key debuts at number 8.

“A Modern Day Distraction” becomes Jake Bugg's sixth Top 20 record (14), as a limited-edition liquid-infused vinyl version of 1975 chart-topper “Being Funny in a Foreign Language” returns to the Top 20 for 2022 ( 15).

Aphex Twin's 1994 LP “Selected Ambient Works Volume II” returns to the Top 40 after a 30th anniversary reissue (21), and finally FINNEAS reaches a career best with his second studio album “For Cryin' Out Loud!” -Hit! (35).
