RJ Barrett will miss the remainder of the preseason with a sprained ACL

The Toronto Raptors announced Tuesday that RJ Barrett will miss at least the remainder of the preseason due to a sprained right acromioclavicular joint he suffered in Sunday's 125-98 preseason win over the Washington Wizards.

Toronto said Barrett's status will be updated after the preseason. The Raptors begin their regular season on October 23rd against the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The injury, more commonly known as the AC joint, affects the joint in the shoulder where the collarbone meets the shoulder blade.

Barrett, 24, suffered the injury late in the second quarter and immediately checked out and went to the locker room. He did not return to the game. Barrett went 7-for-10 from the field and scored 17 points in 14 minutes on Sunday before suffering the injury.

The Toronto native returned home last season as part of the deal between the Raptors and New York Knicks that saw OG Anunoby land in New York and Barrett and Immanuel Quickley move to Toronto. After signing Quickley to a five-year, $175 million contract as a restricted free agent this summer, the Raptors are hoping the combination of rising All-Star Scottie Barnes — who signed his own max extension this summer — Quickley and Barrett led the team into the next era of competitive basketball.

Barrett, who played in Team Canada's return to the Olympics in Paris this summer, is entering his sixth NBA season after being the third overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft. Barrett averaged 20.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.3 assists in 58 games with the Knicks and Raptors last season and career averages were 18.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.9 assists .
