76ers rookie Adem Bona reacts to his preseason debut and adjusts to the NBA

CAMDEN, NJ – The Philadelphia 76ers will continue their preparation schedule for their second exhibition game on Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves in Iowa. The Sixers opened the preseason with a rather easy 139:84 home win over New Zealand.

The competition was an opportunity for coach Nick Nurse to see what young players he has in his squad. He doesn't need to see much from people like Tyrese Maxey or Eric Gordon, for example.

Second-round freshman Adem Bona was able to do a lot in the Sixers' win, finishing with five points and four rebounds in 15 minutes of work. It was a solid showing for the No. 41 pick in June's draft. who is still getting used to the NBA game.

“To be honest, I was really looking forward to this game all day, from the moment I woke up, so there was a lot for me to learn,” Bona said at practice on Wednesday. “I think communication was key for me because it’s a different game than college.”

Communication is something veteran big men Joel Embiid and Andre Drummond Bona have spoken about. That was a big topic of conversation in training camp in the Bahamas, so the Sixers will continue to preach that with him.

“The conditions, the terminology and the way I want to communicate with my guards,” Bona added. “I think that's one of the biggest benefits for me is being able to communicate with them properly in the pick-and-roll and the switches, and I think also, in general, everything, but I think , Communication was key.”

When asked about the difference in speed between the college game and the NBA, Bona commented that he simply needs more experience.

“Of course yes, the speed,” he said. “The speed will be different. I saw something different in training. It was just a game.”

Another adjustment Bona will have to make involves the size and strength of the players he will be competing against. This isn't college anymore as he'll be facing grown men, so along with the speed of the game, that's another adjustment he'll have to make in the NBA.

“Of course also the strength and the physicality,” concluded Bona. “But the speed is obviously different.”
