AEW WrestleDream 2024 featured Ricochet, Will Ospreay and Konosuke Takeshita in a triple threat match for the AEW International Championship; Hangman Adam Page vs. Jay White; Mariah May vs. Willow Nightingale for the AEW Women's World Championship; the Young Bucks vs. Private Party for the AEW Tag Team Championships and Bryan Danielson vs. Jon Moxley in what may be Danielson's final match as a full-time performer.

This week's AEW Dynamite broadcast drew a disastrous 329,000 viewers.

Jay White Def. Executioner Adam Page

The fans had a huge reaction to Hangman Adam Page with mixed chants of “FU Hangman!” and “Cowboy shit!” That's as good as being a heel in AEW, because AEW doesn't book heels, they usually book wrestling matches for wrestling's sake.

The announcing team noted that the Gunns were unable to travel to this pay-per-view broadcast due to injuries sustained after an attack on Dynamite.

Hangman attempted a Buckshot Lariat, but Jay White continued to stumble towards him, preventing Hangman from attempting the move. After catching several forearms, White stumbled away from Hangman, showing he was aware of the ring.

The wildest moment occurred when Executioner Adam Page hit Jay White with a power bomb on the stairs.

Referee Paul Turner threatened to disqualify Hangman after Page pulled out a belt and attempted to use it as a weapon. Of course that didn't happen.

After taking advantage of Adam Page's knee injury, Jay White surprisingly won this match by countering the Buckshot Lariat with a Bladerunner. Juice Robinson came out after the game to congratulate his friend.

Mariah May Def Willow Nightingale

Nigel McGuinness really revels in his role as Mariah May's head glazier.

Willow locked in some kind of modified death lock that looked strange but got a good reaction from the crowd. Excalibur attributed the maneuver to the former CMLL Women's Champion's CMLL influence. Nightingale was able to elicit an even stronger reaction to the move by slamming Mariah's head into her own knee.

Nigel's “Darling Angel” dodged an impressive moonsault from Willow for a near fall on May Day.

May hit a great hurricanrana counter to a special power bomb, followed by a running knee strike and a storm zero for the win. A great game.

Mariah May vs. Willow Nightingale Grade: A-

Jack Perry Def. Katsuyori Shibata; MJF returned

This match immediately became entertaining when Katsuyori Shibata started beating the hell out of Jack Perry. Jack Perry responded with a series of kicks to Shibata's chest, which Perry no-sold. Instead, Shibata continued his attacks with machine gun strikes that caused the Tacoma Dome to explode.

Shibata absolutely dominated this match, even until the very end when he caught Perry with a rear-naked choke. Unfortunately, Shibata's shoulders were on the mat and the referee counted three.

When Daniel Garcia drove up, the fans were amazed. Perry pouted, opening the door for MJF's return to even greater pop. As Garcia and MJF squared off, Perry attacked Garcia from behind.

MJF did a promo for Daniel Garcia and borrowed Elias' infamous cheap heat line about the Seattle Supersonics. MJF announced that he had found his Dynamite Diamond ring, and just as he was about to make Daniel kiss the ring, Adam Cole came back.

Jack Perry vs. Katsuyori Shibata Grade: B-

Konosuke Takeshita Def. Ricochet and Will Ospreay

As expected, there were a lot of great coordinated spots early on. Ricochet (who was in trunks) and Ospreay's standoff was immediately broken up by Takeshita.

At the right time, Takeshita caught Ricochet, but Ospreay jumped on both of them and everyone fell to the floor.

The first chant of “This is great” came after Takeshita hit a DVD on Ospreay on the apron, immediately followed by a Meteora hit from Ricochet on Takeshita.

Fans stomped and clapped after a sequence in which Ospreay, Ricochet and Takeshita exchanged brutal blows. Ricochet and Ospreay then teamed up against Takeshita and the fans booed, although they teamed up for storyline reasons to give Takeshita a receipt. These fans don't care about storylines, they just want moves. That's what AEW taught them.

After cries of “Fight forever,” a coordinated hurricanrana march was carried out at an inconvenient time, leading to a tepid response.

In the match's spot, Takeshita hit a Tombstone on Ricochet through two tables on the outside. This led to a Hidden Blade and a one-count against Takeshita, but Ospreay followed with another Hidden Blade. Don Callis, who was acting as commentator, pulled the referee out of the ring. This revealed a hooded person who hit Ospreay with a screwdriver. Nigel McGuinness spoiled the surprise by saying it was Kyle Fletcher. Takeshita won.

Ricochet vs. Will Ospreay and Konosuke Takeshita Grade: A-

Swerve Strickland returns

Prince Nana promoted his coffee, accidentally called Swerve the ROH World Champion, and brought out the all-time AEW World Champion for his rousing homecoming.

Swerve said he still feels a slight tingling sensation in his neck and fingers. Nevertheless, Swerve is medically safe.

MVP interrupted Swerve next to Shelton Benjamin. MVP continued to promote Swerve as a client, even though Swerve did not respond to any of his calls, texts, or DMs.

Swerve mentioned his match against MVP in DEFY Wrestling years ago. The DEFY reference was well received.

Swerve said guys like Shelton Benjamin paved the way for black wrestlers to do what they do. When Swerve teased Prince Nana, fans booed. But when Swerve said he wouldn't have what he has without Nana, they exploded.

Swerve said he wouldn't turn his back on anyone, which led to a violent fight. Lashley hasn't debuted yet, but it was a great segment.

Swerve Strickland segment grade: B+

Hologram Def. The “beast” Mortos

Mortos and Hologram traded pinfalls on the first two falls. There were a few scary places where Hologram slipped and landed right on his head.

Mortos hit Hologram with a discus lariat, with Tony Schiavone saying he knocked Hologram out “literally.” Hologram's boots remained on his feet throughout the entire spot.

Hologram made it 15-0 after a clumsy Fireman's Carry Slam.

Hologram vs. Mortos Grade: B-

Darby Allin Def. Brody King

AEQW aired a vignette of Darby Allin skating at a skate park and then making his way to the Tacoma Dome in the back of a bus.

That crazy Darby Allin agreed to a spot that featured a 285-pound weight. Brody King walked up a flight of stairs while Darby was underneath.

King hit a nasty Super German Suplex that shook the Tacoma Dome. The many forms of Darby Allin's death wish are still a story in 2024.

After King was thrown from the outside onto the step, Darby Allin hit a Coffin Drop. The Coffin Drop seemed to hurt Darby more than Brody.

Darby Allin vs. Brody King Grade: B

The Young Bucks Def. Private Party

Before they entered, there was a vignette where Amazing Red, Private Party's trainer, gave them a great pep talk. Red told them to get serious, so Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen dropped the shots, changed their music and danced at ringside.

AEW shows a shot of Stokely Hathaway in the crowd. If Private Party loses, it will probably be because of Big Stoke.

After several double-team moves that resulted in Private Party near falls, the Young Bucks hit an awesome Doomsday Device dropkick that resulted in Private Party accidentally hitting a Poison Rana on each other.

Private Party was eliminated from the EVP trigger and seemed to have a real chance of winning. After one last highlight, the Young Bucks won with a Meltzer Driver.

After the game, there were quiet chants of “private party” while Isiah Kassidy cried.

The Young Bucks vs. Private Party Grade: B+

Mark Briscoe Def. Chris Jericho

Just as Big Bill was about to strangle Orange Cassidy through a table, Orange Cassidy came to the rescue and hit Big Bill with a Superman Punch.

Despite the serious undertones as Mark Briscoe fought for his brother Jay's honor, Briscoe continued to use comedic karate moves against Jericho.

Bryan Keith appeared to cost Jericho the match, but Briscoe threw him out. This brought out Rocky Romero, who fought back against Keith.

Briscoe hit a springboard flip through the table, leading to an attempted frog splash into a Codebreaker. Jericho hit a Jay Driller on Mark Briscoe for a near fall. Briscoe came back and won the match with Jay Driller.

Mark Briscoe vs. Chris Jericho Grade: B

Jon Moxley Def. Bryan Danielson

Jon Moxley attacked Bryan Danielson before he could even get into the ring. Danielson's “Final Countdown” music continued as they began to fight, continuing through the entire chorus and into the second verse. TK would get his money's worth for this licensed music.

Marina Shafir received tremendous heat for attacking Danielson behind the referee's back. The fans begged the referee to eject them, but he can't punish what he can't see.

Moxley scratched Danielson's back and bit him.

Shafir interfered again towards the end of the match, but was caught in the act by Bryce Remsburg and thrown from ringside.

Jon Moxley caught the defiant Bryan Danielson with a rear-naked choke. Danielson passed out and the referee called for the bell. The fans were shocked.

Wheeler Yuta and Darby Allin came to the rescue, but Yuta turned against Allin as Blackpool Combat Club destroyed Bryan and pocketed the AEW World Championship. Excalibur cried as he called out the action, and the crowd fell silent as Danielson was placed on a stretcher. A terrible ending to an extremely long pay-per-view film.
