Fleet Week 2024: Blue Angels air show canceled on Saturday due to fog and poor visibility

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — All eyes were on the skies over San Francisco on the second day of the Fleet Week air show, but the Blue Angels never took off and canceled Saturday's performance for safety reasons due to fog and poor visibility.

“I'm a little surprised because I didn't see them by the water,” Walnut Creek resident Eric McMahon said.

Thousands of fans of the San Francisco Fleet Week air show left Marina Green disappointed Saturday after learning that the Navy's Blue Angels were grounded and unable to perform their breathtaking show due to poor visibility.

“Disappointed, I felt like we had walked halfway across the city. I’m sure it’s for safety,” said one fan of the air show.

SF Fleet Week directors posted on X: “The Blue Angels conducted an observation flight and determined the flight was unsafe due to fog.”

“It's disappointing, but the Pelicans put on a show,” San Francisco native Lisa Arrowood said.

“We wondered if it would blow away. It will blow away. I heard if it’s too cloudy they won’t do it,” said Louis Rodriguez of Oakley.

Rodriguez's grandson Nicco even brought his Blue Angels toy plane.

Earlier in the day, weather conditions were better, allowing other military aircraft to take to the skies and perform stunts. The Navy's Leapfrog parachute gave the team the green light to jump.

Jumping is the best part of the job. That's why we're here to give you a good demonstration. It’s definitely exciting,” said U.S. Navy parachutist Cody Rochon.

U.S. Army medics demonstrated how to triage injured patients after an earthquake or natural disaster.

On this day the roar of the Blue Angels is missing. Air show directors say the Blue Angels will return Sunday, weather permitting.
